Ethel passed away at the age of 91. She was predeceased by her husband, Cecil; daughter, Gwen and son-in-law, Wes. She is survived by her son, Ted (Nancy); grandchildren, Mark, Tim, Rebecca and Jennifer and her great-grandchildren, Zack, Lily and Cole. Ethel was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. In 1943, she moved with her dad and sister, Mary to Victoria. Her first job was working at the Old English Sweet Shop. Her faith was very strong and finding a church to worship in was one of the first things they did after arriving in Victoria. They found St. John the Divine to be a place of community and fellowship. Ethel and Cecil were married there in 1946. For over 65 years, St. John’s was her second home. She was a Life Member of the ACW, which she was very proud of. In 1974, she was asked to work in the church office, her dream job. For 20 years, she was the smiling face you would see as you entered the church office. Upon retirement, she spent her days in her garden at the little house on Yew Street (which her husband had built in 1946), enjoying visits from her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, the Sunday morning Family services at St. John’s and Sunday Dinners with her family.
Many thanks to Dr. Pound for the many years of looking after Ethel’s health needs and a special thank you to the caregivers at Oak Bay Lodge, especially Maple 2 and Maple 3 staff.
The happiest times in her life were when she raised her own family and later became an amazing grandmother and great-grandmother. She will always be missed by all of us but we know that she is in a better place now!
A Celebration of Ethel’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at St. John the Divine on Quadra Street. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC or charity of your choice. Condolences may be offered to the family below.
