Picard, Alfred
October 27, 1943 – October 29, 2010
“Fred” as everyone knew him, died in a tragic motorcycle accident near Forks, Washington. He was returning home to Victoria after his 25 day holiday road trip down through Arizona. He left this world fulfilling a dream and doing something he really loved. He will be sadly missed most by his son,
Nigel. They worked together on the oyster farm on Cortes Island and then on the hot dog cart in Victoria. Fred was not only a father to Nigel but his “best friend”. He will also be lovingly missed by his wife of 40 years; his daughter, Vanessa and her partner, Andy; his daughter, Candace and his two wonderful granddaughters, Savannah and Madelyn. Also left to mourn are his two brothers, his two sisters, nephews, nieces and a lot of friends. Fred will always be remembered for his friendly personality, his smile and his warehouse of knowledge.
Visitation will take place from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm prior to the service. Funeral Service to be held in MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 6, 2010 with a reception to follow. Cremation. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.

Dear Bevann and family,
We are shocked and sorry over Fred’s passing. Lots of great memories from when we met when you lived on the sailboat; then all the visits over the years.
Fred always had a ready smile and hugs for us and always lots of laughs. We’ll really miss him.
You’ll always have a place to come to on Cortes Island – just knock on our door!
Love,
Jim and Dianne Hansen
Bevann, Nigel and family,
I was saddened to hear of Fred’s passing. My heartfelt condolences to you all. I have only good memories laced with a great smile and hearty laughter of my meetings with Fred.
RIP Fred
Dear Bevann and family: So sorry for your loss.Fred was a good friend. We often talked about the shellfish industry which we were both a part of. Fred had so much wisdom and experience to share and he did so with great passion. Fred also had an infectous sense of humor. I always enjoyed his visits to my brother’s place ( Eagle Acres) when staying on Cortes. We will all miss Fred .
Bevann and family – please accept my condolence for the loss of Fred. He and I talked, not often, but with pleasure when we met. It began differently; in the early 90s we argued about the Cortes Official Community Plan (and you participated Bevann), but we came to understanding in those areas in which we disagreed. In later years we chatted about Island affairs when we met. More recently, as you were preparing to leave Cortes Island, he and I discussed, at some length, the possibility of purchase of the snooker equipment you had at your B&B, for a proposed Seniors’ Centre, but for which. to my regret, funds could not be freed at that time, despite Fred’s generous sale offer. I last saw Fred in the fall of 2009, on Government Street, outside Munro’s Books, where he was enthusiastically selling hot dogs and drinks from his street vendor’s cart. We had an enjoyable quarter hour chat about the world in general and the strangeness of mankind in particular. He and I got along well; I’ll miss seeing him at unexpected moments, and exchanging random thoughts. He was a friend.
Dearest Vanessa,
Sending you and your family all my love, healing and prayers!
My dad used to always say this poem to me at times of loss, he’d say “remember the flight, because unfortunately the bird is mortal!” Your dad’s memory will always be in your heart and he will walk with you!
BIG HUGS

Mrs Picard and Nigel,
I extend my sincere condolences to you on the sudden and tragic loss of your husband/ father last week. It was a great shock to learn of Fred’s passing – while enjoying a vacation on his motorcycle. I enjoyed my chats with Fred these past three years at St. Nicholas. Unfortunately I am recovering from knee surgery and am unable to attend Fred’s funeral service.
I offer my prayers to you and your family.

RIP Fred, You will be missed
We were shocked and saddened by the news of Fred’s accident. Our heartfelt condolences go to all the family and especially Vanessa, our market buddy. His friendly smile and visits to the market will be missed.
Although we only met Fred a handful of times at some of our planned SCRC rides, I know that his smiling face will be deeply missed by us all.
RIP Fred.
Rob (Ripper) and Leanne (Missy)
My most heartfelt condolences to all of Fred’s loved ones. He was taken away from us way too soon. Fred loved to ride. He loved to tell his stories, but most of all, he just loved life and everyone around him.
Ride free ‘ToosexY’, take your last ride to heaven and ride with the angels, and please help God protect the rest of us riders.
We’ll miss you Fred.
