Freddie (Winifred Ada) Brand (Nee Hunting) was born in Peterborough, England on August 9, 1926, passed away peacefully on November, 20, 2023.
Freddie, the eldest of 5 girls lived in the family home until joining the Wrens during the WWll. She was an accomplished driver and was deployed to the Shetland Island. It was there that she met the love of her life, Peter Brand, a dashing young Sub-Lieutenant in the British Submarines. They were married May 18, 1945.
On April 12, 1958, Freddie landed in Canada with Peter and their 3 children. First settling in Saskatoon. In 1963 they migrated to Vancouver Island. It was here that Freddie started her night studies to be a Chartered Accountant.
In 1968 Freddie and Peter moved to Vancouver. It was there that she completed her studies and became a Chartered Accountant (1971?). After a short time in Private Practice Freddie took up the position of Comptroller of Accounting for the City of Vancouver.
On retirement when not travelling with her husband with their trailer, Freddie volunteered as an accountant with the Canadian Cancer Society.
Peter passed in 2001 and Freddie moved to Sidney. Here she joined the Catholic Parish of St Elizabeths. The Parish was a mainstay of her life in Sidney and she volunteered in many aspects of her Church and helped with accounting at St Elizabeths and the Diocese of Victoria.
Freddie left a legacy of new Canadians, her daughter Jennifer (Hideo), Children Barry (Jeannie) Darryl (sadly deceased) (Anita), Lorna (Troy), Brad (Donna) and Tammy (Harry), plus 12 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. Her son David (Kathryn), children Karen (Robert) Tianna (Thomas) Adrianne (David) Michael plus 6 great grandchildren. Her youngest daughter Rosalyne (Robert).

A Traditional Funeral will be held at St. Elizabeth Parish, 10030 Third Street, Sidney, Monday, November 27, 2023, at 11:00 am.

Marion O'Byrne I was a payroll clerk at the City of Vancouver when Mrs Brand became the Comptroller of Accounting. She was an inspiring leader. My strong recollections of her rolling up her sleeves and digging in with us in the implementation of a new system staying late with us to get the project done. When all was completed, joined us with her husband Peter at a party to celebrate. Well respected by all. I’m still in touch with her secretary Shirley from those days who has the same great memories. COV asked Mrs Brand to come back to help with the City wide SAP implementation in 1999, the last time I saw her. My condolences to her family.

Charles and Sherilyn We will miss our dear Auntie Freddie, and always treasure our time together. She and Uncle Peter were key figures in Charles’ life growing up, and we both remember with great fondness our last time visiting her in Victoria/Sydney. Our hearts go out to the rest of the family. We will be thinking of all of you in the days ahead.
Aunty Freddie is my mum’s (Angela Tunney) oldest sister. I have many happy memories of Aunty Freddie and Uncle Peter visiting England over the years and of them coming to see Ernie and I when we lived in California back in the ‘90’s.
Aunty would talk with such enthusiasm about her large family in Canada. She would remember so much detail about all her grand and great grand children and also her life growing up and meeting Uncle Peter. It was obvious her family meant so much. She gave a lot of insight and started conversations with my mum about things I would never had known about their lives, which I will always be grateful for. Mummy always spoke with admiration of her sisters accomplishments in Accounting, studying when she had a young family, and making time to volunteer. What an amazingly full life she led. Freddie will very much be missed by her family in England. Thinking of you all today. Rest in peace dear Aunty xx
