September 1, 1929 – February 14, 2012

Frederick Mattison Carr passed away peacefully, sitting in his favourite armchair. Fred was the youngest of three children born to Dr. William Carr and Maude Carr in Victoria, B.C. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Elizabeth Chambers, and brother-in- law, David Chambers. He will be very much missed by his brother, John Carr, and many long time close friends.

As a young man Fred attended Glenlyon and Victoria High schools and was first employed in the banking trade in the Victoria area. He also travelled and resided in London, England and central and southern Africa. Eventually Fred returned to his roots in his beloved Victoria where he became the well-known proprietor of several boutique shops, including Tibetan Arts and Crafts and Kashmir, in Market Square. Most recently, he enjoyed attending flea markets, playing bridge, reading extensively and socializing with friends.

Fred bravely and fiercely battled cancer many times in his life and triumphed over the disease for over twenty-five years. He was an active member of the Victoria Laryngectomy Club.

At Fred’s request, there will be no formal service. Condolences may be offered below.

I knew Fred for some forty years, he was always a positive delight to talk to! We had common interest in things Tibetan and antiques and collectibles. Latterly we would often run into each other on the Number 6 bus….. he was a joy to know, a true gentleman and will be missed by many in this community.God bless you Fred, you were unique! -Douglas Henderson

Fred, it is hard to believe your smiling face will not show up in my life again. I always had a lot of respect for your gentle nature. Remembering you in Market Square in the seventies. We lived in interesting times and you helped, in your way to make the world a brighter and more loving place. goodbye, my friend. See you again, in the future world, somewhere, somehow. Love over all. You will be missed in the small, quiet and gentle moments.
    Goodbye for now, Keith Gage-Cole

I was sorry to learn of Fred’s passing. Fred and I worked together at the Canada Trust Company on Government Street in 1949. I took his place as junior clerk and he was elevated up to the position of teller ! He was great to work with and had a good sense of humour. Both living in Oak Bay we quite often rode the bus together to work. I left Victioria for a number of years in 1951 and didn’t return until I had retired in 1987. I saw him once since then when I discovered that he had a shop in Market Square. Another Canada Trust contemporary, Glenn Raven passed away in Vancouver a year or so ago. Two others, Phil and Joyce Redford, I still keep in regular touch with. They reside in North Vancouver. Yet another one is Jean Elphick who is still in Victoria. They were good days. Our wide eyed entry into the world of business and commerce !

    Sincerely,

    Graeme Roberts
