Died October 11, 2011 in Victoria, BC. He was the son of Margaret and the late Arthur Oakes of Vancouver; much loved husband of Dale; dear friend to Bear; loving father of David (Louise) and Sandra (Aaron); Pops to Matthew. He is survived by many family and friends in Ontario and B.C.
Gary’s journalism career spanned 52 years, from B.C. to Ontario, and he loved every day of it. He was a prize winning rose grower, and he enjoyed his snooker games with his buddies. Gary was a man that lived true to himself. A kind, loving man with attitude, a wicked sense of humour, and his own point of view, he will be deeply missed.
A celebration of Gary’s life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wild ARC Animal Rehab Centre or Our Place Society.
