Born on September 2, 1950 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Victoria, Gary was taken from us all too soon at Victoria Hospice on April 2, 2010.

Gary loved spending his childhood as a Boy Scout, advancing to the rank of Queen Scout and attending the National Scout Jamboree in Pennsylvania, a feat for which he was always proud. Gary spent his youth as a reserve Navy sailor on the HMCS Malahat before becoming a diver in the Coast Guard. He then spent years adventuring and travelling throughout Europe, Asia, the South Pacific, and North America. Upon return to Canada, he moved to Calgary, Alberta and met his future wife, Jenny. After marrying in 1977, Gary and Jenny moved to Lethbridge, Alberta and had one daughter, Miranda Lee, in 1978. Gary and family moved back to his hometown of Victoria in 1991.

Gary was, more than anything, a kind and peaceful man and a loving husband and father and had the biggest heart imaginable. Gary’s wife and daughter were the loves of his life and he would do anything for his family. Gary was an exceptionally hard worker and contributed all he could to the world throughout his entire life, even in years of ill health. Gary was liked by all who had the pleasure to meet him. He loved a good joke more than anyone and had a great sense of humour and could find humour in all situations. In addition, Gary was immensely creative and enjoyed drawing, painting, cooking, landscaping, and working around the house. He was also incredibly intelligent, taking a keen interest in his family’s own history, world history, and current events. Gary was never afraid to try anything new or take on any challenge and was the bravest and strongest man his family could imagine. Gary was always optimistic when facing all challenges, including his declining health.

Gary was predeceased by his father Thomas Angus and mother Elizabeth (Betty) Angus (nee Hodge), as well as his cherished mother-in-law Henny Visser (nee Hoefman), and much-loved family dog, Indiana. In addition to his best friend and wife of almost 33 years and his precious daughter, Gary leaves behind his beloved in-laws including father-in-law Syb Visser (Arlene), brother-in-law Paul Visser (Chrissy), and sisters-in-law Rita Visser and Teresa Kern (Tony). Gary also leaves behind brothers Brian Angus and Bradley Angus as well as sister Joanne Angus. Additionally, Gary leaves nieces Brittany Cole and Toni Kern, and nephews Jesse Cole, Kyle Kern, Locke Angus, and Ted Angus. Gary also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Also missing Gary will be loving pets Hobbes and Spooky, who will now need a new bedmate to keep her company.

We would like to give our deepest thanks to Gary’s tireless doctor, Dr. David MacNaughton, and to the entire staff of Victoria Hospice, who allowed Gary to spend his last days with dignity and comfort. By Gary’s request, there will be no service. As an avid animal lover, in lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Victoria Cat Rescue Society, Victoria SPCA, or Victoria Hospice.
