Gavin Trevor Swan, 23, who spent most of his life in his beloved Mill Bay, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2016 from a brain tumour. He was surrounded by family and friends. Gavin loved all aspects of life, including writing and playing music, reading history and philosophy and debating anything with anyone. Gavin was blessed with a wonderfully diverse group of friends, many of whom he had known his entire life.
Gavin’s friends and family gave him tremendous support and comfort as he bravely dealt with his illness. For that we are forever grateful. We will treasure every day that Gavin was able to spend with us. He was a true blessing and he will be in our hearts forever.
Please join us for a celebration of Gavin’s life at noon on Sunday November 13th in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Shawnigan Lake Museum where Gavin spent a wonderful summer.

Words are feeble tools with which to express to others the feelings that accompany the loss of someone we deeply loved. But words are all we have. The Ross-Smith family, Tim, Jasmine and Graham are profoundly saddened by Gavin’s untimely death; Timothy especially so, as Gavin was like a brother to him, and brotherly love runs deep. Depth of grief is proportional to the intensity of relationship, and so it is to you Trevor, Susan, Derek and Evan that we extend our condolences as you deal with your loss and feelings that we cannot really fathom. We know that you loved Gavin with every cell and fibre within you and that you did all that was humanly possible to achieve a happier outcome.
With love and respect,
Timothy, Jasmine and Graham Ross-Smith
Derek, Evan, Susan and Trevor.
I am so sorry for your loss.
This must be so hard for you.
You are in my heart and mind.
My deepest sympathies go out to each of you.

Susan, Trevor, Derek and Evan,
We’ve never met but our son, Hayden, introduced us many years ago to Gavin. When Hayden called us with this terrible news last weekend we wept. Whenever Gavin visited us Rhonda and I always smiled because we knew it would be entertaining. I’m so proud that Hayden befriended someone as bright, mature and talented as Gavin. He enriched Hayden’s life and we feel we knew someone special. Before Hayden and Chris left for McGill they tried to visit Gavin but it just wasn’t the right time. I just wish we had all been able to say goodbye. It’s so important that your family was around him. They say the worst thing a person can experience is the death of a child. Our thoughts are with you. We miss Gavin terribly and I can only imagine what you are going through. Our thoughts are with you. Alex and Rhonda
