It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gayle Darlene Fisher.

Gayle was born on July 23, 1939 and passed away peacefully at the Royal Jubilee Hospital Patient Care Centre in Victoria British Columbia on August 21, 2012

Gayle led a very active sports life. She mastered any sport in which she participated. In her younger years she excelled at badminton, recognized on provincial, national and international levels. Later on her sports life led her to an avid passion for golf.

Gayle joined the RCAF in the mid 1950`s and remained enlisted for fifteen years. She served in Zwiebreuken Germany, Metz France and CFB Greenwood Nova Scotia.

In the early 1970`s Gayle, one to always look for new challenges and opportunities, undertook her Registered Psychiatric Nursing education. Following graduation she worked in mental health for a number of years until she had to go on long term disability as a result of severe rheumatoid arthritis.

Gayle was actively engaged in many golf events at the Carnoustie Golf Club in Port Coquitlam during the 1980`s and 1990`s. In spite of her many health challenges she maintained a full membership in the club and competed as one of the golf club members.

Gayle and Dot moved to Pender Island in 1996. Gayle quickly embraced and loved the island way of life. She was a devoted volunteer and an active member of the golf club. She undertook the oversight of many diverse golf tournaments, the most famous of which was the annual Pender Island Pro-Am. Gayle held various positions in the golf club and established systems to improve the efficiency of the club operations. Gayle was an active member of the Pender Island Restorative Justice Committee until last year when ill health restricted her participation. She was also intricately involved in many Pender Island community events, programs and activities.

Gayle had so many friends on the island who were always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. For this dedication and commitment to Gayle, the family is truly grateful and extends a heartfelt thanks to you all.

Gayle was passionate about her animals who she loved unconditionally. She took great pride in her garden. She had an incredibly strong spirit, zest for life and great determination. She was a very special person to all who knew her and was loved by all those whose lives she touched. Gayle had a sense of wit and humour that allowed her to turn diversity into victory and negativity into a positive outlook. She was a person who never ever gave in to her physical limitations.

Gayle is survived by her sister Lonnie (Scotch Creek BC), sister Charlene (Wetaskwin Alberta), brother Raymond and Judi (Victoria BC), brother Gordon and Janice (Scotch Creek BC), brother Charles and Diane (Scotch Creek BC), many nieces and nephews and her long-time friend, Dorothy (Dot) Jennings.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Gayle on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 2 PM at the Pender Island Golf Club.

The internment of ashes will take place at 1 PM on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at the Pender Island Cemetery. A Pot Luck will follow the internment of ashes at 3 PM at 3715 Port Road – Gayle`s home.

I found out of Gayle’s passing from the RCAF Airwomen Newsletter.

Gayle was my bridemaid when I got married in 1966 in Greenwood NS. I enjoye my friendship with her when we were living in barracks. We liked to give each other a hard time & enjoyed each others sense of humour. I remember going with her to Nordin NB to visit an old ex service friend. When my hubby went to the military hospital in Halifax a few mos after we were married she came to stay with me which I thought was very thoughtful of her. I always knew she oved sports & excelled in them. I remeber her loving her badminton.

I lost contact with Gayle after we went to Germany in Jan of 69.

My hubby & I send our condolences to her family & friends.

What a strong & courageous lady.

With caring thoughts, Sandra & Ferg Webster

Gayle and I shared many years together as good friends. We golfed together a lot and played her golf games(which she always won and crowed about it We had so much playing those games we didn’t care that she always won and we supported her retirement fund each week). Her and I went to the concerts and plays together on Pender Island and shared our thoughts on same and how we enjoyed all the talent on this Island. We both also loved animals and shared pictures and e-mails of our animals and all others constanly. I admired her never giving up no matter and helped her all I could in scoring and lists etc. for the annual Pro-Am and on the big days we worked long hours and were exhausted but next year we did it again.. She was an inspiration to us all and I wil miss her wit, her barbs and all the good times we had at lunches etc. I am glad that we wer able to have lunch together on the Friday before she went into the hospital the next week. She was so frail but she soldiered on and we had a good chat. She was a good friend and I will miss her greatly. Rest in peace Gayle! J.
