George Dashkewytch, 98, of Victoria, British Columbia passed away, at home, on Friday,  April 12, 2024. George was born in Zabolotiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine, August 28, 1925, to  Peter and Mary Dashkewytch. George moved  to Victoria shortly after the passing of his wife  Mary. For the past three years, George was a  resident of Parkwood Place in Victoria.  Previously, George had been a long-time  resident of Kelowna B.C. where he and his wife, Mary, had retired in 1986.

George and Mary were fixtures in the Kelowna community. Dad’s routine started with daily exercise at Parkinson’s, continued as the “World’s Greatest Cribbage Player” seen at venues throughout the city. Whist was on Fridays and, of course, the daily ritual of getting those dishes done, completed his day.

George and Mary retired from their previous home in Terrace Bay, Ontario. Dad was a long-time employee of Kimberly Clark Pulp and Paper. Dad’s last  position, at the Mill, was as engineer of the locomotive. There were many stories, around the dinner table, about his adventures at the mill and on the locomotive.

Dad was always on the move in Terrace Bay. He was an active member of the Loyal Order of Moose, a staunch supporter, builder and volunteer with minor hockey, an active volunteer and leader within the Scouting movement. These were Dad’s formal volunteer positions as he was always there to help a friend, neighbour or community member.

Dad’s hobbies were his boys. Countless miles, up and down the roads of Northern Ontario, taking his boys to their hockey games was what he relished.  Dad was particularly proud of putting his four boys through university. George will be missed and lovingly remembered by his four boys: George and Lea (Innisfail, Alberta), Mark and Martha (Victoria, B.C.), Peter (Ladner B.C.), Paul and Lynn (Zihuatanejo, Mexico), as well as close family members and friends: Kerstin Dashkewytch (Vancouver BC), Vicki and Roger Moore (Thunder Bay, Ont.), Myles and Bonnie Borsa (Thunder Bay Ont.) “Gigi – Dido’s” hundred-watt smile and tender speeches will be remembered by nine grandchildren; Troy, Travis (Carrie), Natalya (Caleb), Sonja (Joel), Jemma (Alec), Marah, Jarvis, Rob, Bryan, nine great grandchildren; Dawson, Izabel, Carter, Kaylin, Gracie, Ava, Alex, Aaron, Ozias and one great great grandchild; Caspen.

George was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Mary. George will be interred, alongside Mary, at the St. Andrew’s Catholic Mausoleum, Thunder Bay, Ont.

His “Celebration of Life” will take place at a later date.

Live Your Dash

The line etched into a headstone.

Between the dates of birth and death

Represent each step we take on earth.

…and every single breath.

To many, it is but a hyphen…

Marking time between the years,

But in that little dash, is a lifetime.

Of laughter, love and tears.

We each create the legacy.

Our dash will someday represent

And decide if the life we’re given

Is truly lived…or merely spent
