FORBES, GEORGE

Born on May 22, 1922 in Greenock, Scotland. Passed away peacefully on February 19, 2011 in Victoria, BC. Predeceased by his beloved wife Shirley in 1995.

George will be greatly missed by his sister Jean, children Heather (Dan), Valerie (Bob), Ian (Anna) and Edwin (Marda). He was devoted to his grandchildren Kyle (Carol), Scott (Elizabeth), Alexandra, Jacqueline, Holly, Charlotte, Stewart and Liya, and to his great-granddaughter Lucy. He will be fondly remembered by his niece Heather and nephew Jack (Nancy – children Julie and Leah).

George came to Victoria from Scotland in 1946 and began his successful career at Yarrows shipyard before transferring to Burrard Dry Dock in North Vancouver. He then became president and co-owner of Bel-Aire Shipyard, also in North Vancouver. Shirley was his biggest supporter in all these endeavours.

Some of Dad’s favourite activities were soccer, golf, long walks, crosswords and travels with Mum, and his greatest pleasure was spending time with family. Dad was a modest, kind and generous man – a true gentleman.

Special thanks to Dr. Ted Rosenberg and the staff at Kiwanis Pavilion for all their care, and to the visitors who brightened his days.

A celebration of George’s life will be held at the Union Club, 805 Gordon Street, Victoria, BC on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 2 pm. Donations, if desired, to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Alzheimer Society of BC. Condolences may be offered at www.mccallbros.com.

He will always be a part of our lives.

I worked for George at Bel-Aire Shipyard as the company CFO. It was the best job I ever had mainly due to the leadership provided by George. He always treated everyone he dealt with fairness, kindness and respect.

George was a true gentleman and he will be missed.
