It is with deep sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of Gilberto da Costa Ferreira on October 8, 2021 after a brief battle with cancer. Gilberto was Born February 4, 1934 in Ponta Garça, on the island of São Miguel, Açores, Portugal.
Gilberto is survived by his loving wife Maria Georgette, his children; Tony, Joe (Kathy), Linda (Steve), Victor (Natalia); grandchildren, Janene, Dylan, Emily, Josh, Raeside, Paisley and great grandchild Hudson.
Gilberto immigrated to Canada as a young man in 1956, as one of the first immigrants to arrive from the Açores Islands to build a better life for himself and future family. He was an extremely hard worker and was not afraid to take on any challenge that would take him closer to his goal. This drive to succeed would eventually lead him to Campbell River and his job at the Elk Falls Pulp and Paper Mill where he worked as a longshoreman for over 35 years while simultaneously building 11 homes in the area for his growing family.
In addition to building a better life for himself, he also supported and paved the way for many other families in fulfilling their dreams of coming to Canada.
Those that knew Gilberto would describe him as an honest, hardworking man with a great sense of humor who had a deft hand at creating wine, which he was always happy to share with others.
He will be greatly missed by all. The family would like to thank all that have provided their loving support during this very difficult time.
A Service will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 4635 Elk Lake Drive, Victoria BC on Monday, October 18th, 2021 at 12:00 pm. Followed by a procession to Royal Oak Burial Park, 4673 Falaise Drive, Victoria and a memorial reception in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria.
