Born in Victoria on November 28, 1929, Hamish passed away peacefully on November 5, 2015 at Kiwanis Pavilion, surrounded by most of his immediate family. Hamish is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sheila; his children, Monty (Sachi), Caerleon (Garson) and Angus (Angela); his grandchildren, Kade, Liliana and Ellie. He was predeceased by his elder sister, Rosemary and survived by his younger sisters, Gillian and Heather, along with innumerable nephews and nieces. Hamish enjoyed all that life had to offer: travel, adventure, close friends, good food/cookies and a glass of Rye to end each day, especially if he could do so with his family. The family is truly grateful that Hamish was so lovingly cared for by the staff at Kiwanis Pavilion for the last four years.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Hamish’s name to the Kiwanis Pavilion Foundation – http://www.kiwanispavilion.ca/.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, Johnson and Vancouver Street at 2:00 pm with reception to follow.  Memories and stories can be shared with the family below.

My deepest sympathies are with Sheila and the family at this time. I will always treasure the tact and charm that Hamish used in ensuring the smooth operations of an often unruly department and the care and friendship that he offered to its members. I shall miss him very much.

Sheila and family, our thoughts are with you at this time.

  • Sarah and Emily

    Dear Bridgeman family,

My sincerest condolences to you and yours.

My daughter Emily and I looked for Hamish every week as we visited Kiwanis. He always met us with a big smile and positive outlook. He shared with my toddler the most tender, sincere moments sharing a joke, a song or a story book. Her unpredictable toddler moods did not phase him. He loved sharing with us the photos of his family and was such a good sport during our bowling sessions. We will miss Hamish very much but we are so glad to have been able to know and love him these last few months.

    Dear Shelia

Penny and I are thinking of you and your family at this time.

Hamish was a gentle man and a gentleman. You know I always admired you both as wonderful parents and “favourite persons” I am sure your faith and deep love of family will help at this time.

We will remember close and happy times on Saltspring and at at your home on Ten Mile Point. There was always much laughter in the air and Hamish’s quiet presence was always a positive.

I will say a prayer for us all in church today.

    Take care.

    Larry and Penny

    Dear Sheila, Monty and family,

Please accept my condolences, and those of my daughter Alison, over your loss of Hamish. During the years that my late wife Linda was also resident in Kiwanis Pavilion, I greatly enjoyed my regular chats with Hamish. I valued his gentle, friendly nature and his gentlemanly demeanour. I know that Linda also appreciated his friendliness and sense of fun: these qualities of his contributed greatly to the fact that she not only endured but positively enjoyed her years at KP.

    With all good wishes.

    For Sheila and her family,
I know exactly how you must all feel having gone through the same only 2 years ago, and I fully agree that Kiwanis Pavillion does an outstanding job looking after their patients. It was a great help for Jack to find that Hamish was in the same place as him when he could no longer stay at home, and they had many happy meetings during activity periods or sometimes Hamish could just come to visit on the 1st floor. And the fact that they had worked together at UVic and attended the Friday lunches with their former co-workers must have given them both great pleasure as well. I do hope to be able to attend the Celebration of his life, and maybe even the small memorial that the Kiwanis Pavillion puts on.
I hope you will find strength through the memories you all have of a very special man.
    Wenche

    Dear Sheila and family,

We send our sincere condolences and prayers at this difficult time.
Hamish was a true friend and gentleman. I will always remember his support and guidance over the many years that we worked together at UVic. I also remember fun we had, while visiting at your beautiful Saltspring home.

    May God bless you all.
