It is with sadness and love that we announce the passing of Herbert Douglas Spray on November 21st, 2025, in Victoria, B.C.

Born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Doug’s career began in 1954 with the RCMP. Even then, his character shone through; during training at Depot, he would happily take on stable duties for others simply to spend time with the horses he loved. Following his time on Highway Patrol in Edmonton, he moved to Whitehorse, Yukon, in 1959—a move that would shape the rest of his life. It was in Whitehorse that he met Carol, the love of his life, and where his career in public administration took root.

In 1968, Doug took on the role of Administrator for the new AECL town of Pinawa, Manitoba. The family returned to Whitehorse in 1974, where Doug served in several senior positions within the Territorial Government.

The Yukon was more than just a workplace; it was home. It was there that Doug and Carol raised their three sons, Bryan, Michael, and Kevin. Doug looked back on his path with no regrets, grateful for a full life enriched by family and friends. He believed in giving back, volunteering throughout his life with organizations like the Rotary Club in Whitehorse. In later years, he shared the companionship of his beloved dog, Tutshi, visiting seniors’ centers to bring comfort as a therapy dog team.

He carried a passion for reading—fostered by his mother when he was young—throughout his life and remained an avid bridge player until his final weeks.

Doug is survived by Carol; his sons Bryan (Peggy) and Michael (Sarah); his grandchildren, his great-grandson, his extended family, and his many good friends. He was predeceased by his brother Bob, his sister Ivy, and tragically his beloved youngest son Kevin.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites those who wish to honour Doug’s memory to make a donation to his charity of choice, the Cancer Research Society.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.
