February 7, 1913 – August 9, 2010

Hilda passed away peacefully at the Selkirk Place Nursing Home, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on Monday, August 9, 2010 with her son Louis and his wife Katherine at her bedside. She was born in Jonesport, Maine, USA and graduated from Bangor High School, class of 1932. She was predeceased by her parents Lewis Smith and Annie (Simmons) of Jonesport; husband Jerome (Ben) of Victoria; brothers Lewis of Fall River, Massachusetts, Harris of Huntsville, Alabama, Eugene of Lincoln, Maine, Ladwic of Miami, Florida; sister Mildred of Kenai, Alaska and her son Jerome Michael of Dearborne, Michigan. Hilda is survived by sister Barbara of Lewistown, Montana; brothers-in-law Phillip and wife Leone (Babineau) of Portland, Maine and Evan of Lincoln, Maine; son Louis and daughter-in-law Katherine (Buziak) of Victoria; daughter-in-law Joy (Dudley) Lovejoy of Dearborne, Michigan; Granddaughter Cherie (Lovejoy) Scanlon and husband Thomas of Windam, Maine; Grandsons Brian and wife Annie of White Lake, Michigan; Nicholas and wife Marilyn (Devine) of Sooke, BC, Canada; plus four Great Grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Hilda worked as executive secretary to the Manager of the Lincoln Worsted Mill for many years, and later as medical secretary for Dr. Weiss of Lincoln. From the late 1940’s through the early 1960’s Hilda and Ben owned and operated the local IGA store in Lincoln. Ben and Hilda moved to California in the early 1960’s to be closer to their sons who were working in the aerospace industry there. She was executive secretary to the Director of the Flight Test Division of North American Aviation during those years. After 20 years in Southern California, Ben and Hilda moved back east to Portland, Maine, residing there for 10 years. She joined the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in 1981 and served as Vice Regent of the Elizabeth Wadsworth Chapter of the DAR in Portland from 1989 to 1992. In 1992 Ben and Hilda moved to Victoria, British Columbia, sponsored as landed immigrants by their son Louis and his Canadian wife Katherine, who had retired there from California in 1989.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Selkirk Place Nursing Home in Victoria for their loving care of Hilda for the last 18 months.

There was a private service in Victoria, for family only, on August 12th. The casket will be transported to the Clay Funeral home in Lincoln, Maine for a viewing and paying of last respects.     It is with a sad heart that I am informed of Grammy’s passing. I know she will be deeply missed by the family. Hilda was a fine lady and the time I was fortunate to be in her presence always moved me. I will always remember her poise, kindness, wisdom and caring. Hilda was one of those people who influenced who you want to be. My sincere condolences.
