It is with great sorrow that we say goodbye to Horace Lindsey.  He was born in Victoria and remained there the 105.5 years of his life.  He married Jean Fletcher in 1942 and shortly thereafter he left for “overseas” where he served as Sergeant of the 4th Light Anti Aircraft Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.  During this time, he learned that he was the father of his first child Sandra.  When he returned home, he was hired by the City of Victoria to work in the field he had apprenticed as horticulturist at Beacon Hill Park Nursery.  His main responsibility was to produce the hanging baskets seen on the lamp standards of Victoria’s downtown streets which he did until his retirement.  Horace and Jean enjoyed many activities over the years including square dancing, being members of the Friday Night Couples’ Club at First United Church and travelling to many parts of the world doing genealogy. The last seven years Horace has lived at The Victorian on Douglas Independent Living home for seniors where he had a loving community surrounding him.

Horace is predeceased by his wife Jean and sister Joan Ord.  He will be greatly missed by: daughter Sandra Roodenburg (John), son Neil (Barb), daughter Sharon Bondesen (Jim), grandchildren Brenda Hesketh (Kyle), Ineke Burritt (Joseph), Dave Roodenburg (Sheryl), and Beth Bagnato (Basilio), 12 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren plus nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, B.C. on Saturday, March 15, 2025 at 2:00 pm with Reverend Shelagh MacKinnon officiating.

Special thank you to Dr. T. Rosenberg and his Home Team, the Saanich Community Home Care nurses and the VGH doctors and nurses for all the loving care that has been given to Horace.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

On behalf of the Royal Canadian Artillery Association, please accept our sincere condolences on the passing of Sergeant Horace Lindsey. When a Gunner dies, it is the tradition of The Regiment to order, “End of Mission, Stand Easy” at their funeral or memorial, to signify that their earthly mission has concluded, and in the hope that our comrade is now in the final place of peaceful repose. The ultimate “Stand Easy” where we will all meet up again one day.
“End of Mission, Sergeant Lindsey, Stand Easy”
Sergeant Lindsey‘s name has been recorded in our Lest We Forget project.

On behalf of The Royal Regiment of Artillery, please accept sincere condolences at the passing of Horace Lindsay. His service with the guns with 4th LAA Regiment RCA during the Second World War has earned him the gratitude of every Canadian. From defending the UK from air attack from 1942 to 1944, to Juno Beach and onward through France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany; he and his fellow gunners endured hardship and the threat of death to bring freedom to Europe. His family can take some comfort in knowing that his service is remembered by all Canadian gunners. Ubique.

What memories! Horace and Jean were schoolmates of our mum Laurel Minnis Eby and along with our father Earl Eby, they were great square dancing pals. Many an evening after a night of allamande lefts and do-si-dos, the gang would come to our house and Chinese food was ordered, always from Don Mees. We kids always enjoyed a feast of Chinese for breakfast the next morning. After a very long life, RIP Horace Lindsay. The Eby kids – Dawn, Art (predeceased), Ted and Sheri
