My deepest sympathy to all Hugh’s family. He was a wonderful teacher and his gift of music has made a huge difference in my life. My favourite High School memories are of experiences with the band, and there is much music in my life today, thanks to his patience and gentle leadership. His messages every Christmas for more than 30 years have a been a wonderful reminder of his kindness and gentle leadership. May your many memories sustain your spirits in this time of loss.

  • Larry Eastman

    Dear McCullough family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. McCullough was a huge influence in my life, not just as my teacher but as an example of life well-lived. As a teacher myself for close to 25 years, I would be honoured if even one student admired me as much as we all loved and admired Mr. McCullough.

  • Don & Lil. Bursey

We very much miss “Shorty” McCullough. He often spoke of God’s

goodness and grace, even in difficult times. We sorrow, but not

as those who have no hope.

    regards,

Don & Lil. Bursey (majors) Retired

  • Ken and Marie Moore

    Hugh and Bobbie

We are so sorry that your Dad has gone, but we know he is
where he wants to be with your Mom. His only wish was for
the Lord to leave him on earth until Elsie was gone, and
    the Lord answered his prayers.

He was the greatest friend a person could have, was so
very much a part of our family’s lives. He was truly the best
christian example for our kids, of how a man should live,
    known as Uncle Shorty.

Ken and Marie are so sorry they could not say goodbye to him
at the Salvation Army on Wednesday, but, as Shorty was
aware of, the medication Marie is taking right now , Ken
could not leave her. The Monday before Shorty passed away
he told Ken that Marie was in his prayers that everything would be okay.

We are now dealing in our hearts not having Shorty in our world
anymore. We will truly miss him.

Please accept our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time. Growing up on Stanton Road, being a member of Gayle’s wedding party, I can say we had good times at your family home. They were a warm and wonderful couple and great neighbours. We had good times with Gayle at our home and enjoyed watching her grow up. May the good memories keep you safe and may you find peace in these loving memories.

  • Anne Rankin (nee Hipkin)

Please accept my heartfelt condolence on the loss of your father. I was one of his music students and his leadership within the music program at South Carleton made those awful high school years not only bearable but enjoyable. He provided a safe and nonjudgmental haven for not only myself, but the other band members of my class. He was inspirational in his leadership and a truly wonderful friend. You were very fortunate to have him as your father, grandfather and great grandfather.
    Anne

  • Allan and Pauline Bacon

    Dear Hugh and family,

Pauline and I extend our deepest sympathy in your loss. Shorty – as he was affectionately known to everyone – was a friend and colleague when he taught with the Carleton Board and worshipped with us at Woodroffe. He was universally liked and respected and will be remembered asa very fine Christian gentleman. Shorty was one of those rare people who had a positive influence on all those with whom he came into contact.
He will indeed be missed, but those who are left have many happy memories of his time with us.

  • Nora (Cowell) McEwen

Dear McCullough family. I was saddened to read of “Mr. Music’s” death. What a privilege to have been taught by him at South Carleton High School. He was a wonderful teacher and a true gentleman. May memories of your dear father and grandfather comfort you at this difficult time.

    Sincerely, Nora (Cowell) McEwen

  • Michael McCleery

I was very saddened to here of Mr. McCullough’s passing. My condolences to all of his family. Mr McCullough was my music teacher and band leader for my first two years at South carleton High School, before health issues sadly prevented him from doing what he loved. He was a wonderful teacher, but more importantly a great man. He certainly made my transition to high school a much easier one. He treated everyone with compassion and always conducted himself with grace, dignity and that beautiful smile!! Simply, he earned your respect.quickly. The music room was indeed the coolest place to hang out. I considered him as a second father, as I’m sure many other students did as well. He will be missed by all who knew him. What a musical party they are having in heaven.

  • Marta Cope

To the family of Mr McCullough, please accept my sympathies during this difficult time. Mr McCullough was my music teacher back in the early ’70s at South Carleton High School. He was my favourite teacher back then. It was always fun to go to either music class or band practice. The band room was always the coolest place to hangout. We had a lot of good times with Mr McCullough.

    Hugh:

My immediate memory of your dad is when on a CBE PD day we shared our thoughts about our jobs. Your dad gave very thoughtful
and helpful suggestions to me and I had great respect for him because of this.
Actually I could have succeeded him at South Carleton HS but chose a different option. My prayers are with you and your family at this time. May God bless you.

  • Laura & Ted Venables

We have fond memories of ‘Shorty’ He will be missed.

  • Jennifer McNaughton Titley

My sincere sympathy upon the loss here on earth of your dad and friend. I was a student in Hugh’s music classes back at South Carleton in the 70s. As a shy music student it was my great gift to know that my music teacher was a Christian and so proud that he taught and lived what he believed. His smile was so welcoming and his energy was so passionately displayed in his leading of the band. It is obvious that he was a gift to many. I am happy to have said I knew Mr. McCullough.

  • Beth (McGuirl) Bracken

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. McCullough’s passing. I attended South Carleton HS and remember him as a very kind and gentle man. Although he was never my teacher, he made a great impression on me. I have thought about him many times over the years. Your Dad/Grandfather was a good friend of my uncle, Norman “Duke” McGuirl… I trust they are making beautiful music together in paradise.

  • julie spooner

My thoughts are with you all. Shorty was someone who made everyone around him feel appreciated and special. He had a keen interest in the activities that he shared with each of you. Many those memories hold him close to you, Julie
