Born October 20, 1960 in Sherbrooke, Quebec to William Gillies (Gil) Ross and Cynthia Mead (Van Law) Ross, Ian grew up in Ottawa and graduated from Glebe Collegiate. Musician, writer, artist, sailor, pedicab driver, ESL teacher, coach, activist, friend, brother, and son, Ian led an adventurous, creative and independent life, riding its many ups and downs with grit, humour, and an unwavering appreciation of the absurdity of it all. From winning the under-16 Ontario gymnastics championships at age 14, to writing and performing for 20 years as lead singer and guitarist of Red Eye Express and other bands in London, England, to leading charter sailing tours in Panama, to undertaking a college program in graphic novels at age 54, Ian had many interests and pursued them all with determination and heart. Passed away suddenly at home on August 23, 2016 in Victoria, BC. Ian will be missed greatly by his father Gil Ross, brother Peter, and sisters Lucy and Deborah.

Service in Victoria to be held in building on Pier B at Ogden Point at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, August 30, 2016.

I am an old band mate from one of Ian’s first bands – Static Beat. We even shared a house w/other musicians for a short time. We had quite the adventures during the time I was with the group and I always wondered what happened to him. I don’t believe he recorded anything from that band but “Singing” and “Autumn Leaves” were the songs I remember most. So sorry to hear he passed way too soon.

I know I am late to offer condolences – I used to know Ian in the early 90ies. I was a teenager and he was a very decent guy, picking me up from the street and letting me stay in his house in kentish town, london. he listened to my boring stories and took me along to concerts of his band red eye express. at least 2 guys from the band were also crashing at his place. he was a perfect gentlemen who never took advantage of my pretty desperate situation. he was a good one and i wish i would have been able to tell him that.

I believe Ian Ross was a distant relative to James Burrill Secor of Chariton, Iowa. The records I have seen indicate that Herbert W Secor, was the brother of James and Ian’s great-great grandfather. James was a friend of my mother, and wrote to her about 20 times from 1936 to 1937. I have those letters. I am trying to forward them to a living relative, rather than donate them to the Special Collections of Iowa State, from whence James graduated. As far as I can tell, Herbert was the only one of the four Secor siblings to have children. I realize this is a very odd posting, but so far, this is the only way I have found for communicating the Ian’s immediate family.

I knew Ian from when he was born, a darling boy. His life was challenging but he was a survivor, brave and funny – until now. I am sad.
