Died peacefully at home on June 11th at the age of 65. Barry is survived by his wife Susan Jennings, his father Allister (Bud) Worth, brother Brian (Jane), sister Lorraine (Ron Tremblay) and sister Dianne (Robin Saunders). Predeceased by his mother Zita and brother Peter. Barry will be sorely missed by the family he left behind.
Barry joined the Canadian Forces in September 1964 at the age of 18 and completed 33 years of service. While he served with both the Royal Canadian Regiment and the PPCLI, his heart was always with The Canadian Guards, the first regiment he joined.
After completing his basic training, Barry was posted to the 1st Battalion, The Canadian Guards, in Camp Picton, Ontario, in 1965. His first employment with The Canadian Guards was as a subaltern on the Ceremonial Guard in Ottawa. At 20 years of age, he was sent to Cyprus to serve as the Canadian Contingent Economics Officer. That was just the start of a varied career with the army: in 1966 he was named the Team Captain for The Canadian Guards Small Arms team and later spent a year in Germany with the Canadian representative small arms team in the NATO Skill-at-Arms Competition (Prix LeClerq); in 1968 was posted to Germany with 2 RCR as Mortar Platoon Commander and later served as Assistant Adjutant for a year; in 1971 he was posted to 3PPCLI as second-in-command of a rifle company and, later, was employed as the Infantry Officer at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering; from 1976 to 1979 he was the Regular Support Officer with the Hamilton Militia District; and in 1981 he was employed on his first staff job when he was posted to Management Consulting Services Unit Pacific, followed by a similar posting to Ottawa; in 1991 he was sent to Central America with the United Nations to help supervise the disarmament of the Contra rebels; his final posting was with Pacific Region Operations at Maritime Pacific Headquarters.
Army life suited Barry, but in 1996 he was ready to retire and enjoy a new chapter in his life. And he did. He lived life to the fullest, enjoying every moment with his wife and beloved dogs beside him.
A celebration of life will be held at his home on June 18, 2011at 2:30p.m.. A second celebration is being planned for Petawawa, where Barry grew up and his family still reside.
Donations in support of ALS research would be appreciated.

I was so sorry to hear of Barry’s passing. I too knew Barry from high school days in Petawawa. At that time he was my brother Dave Bayne’s best friend.Such good memories. I send my sincere condolences to all his family.

  • Eugene and Michelle Squires

Having just learned of Barry’s passing I am saddened that my old friend is gone. I remember our time together in Central America and our stint in El Almendro during the demobilizing of the Contras, it took a good sense of humour and a shot of rum to get the day going.

I met Barry in Costra Rica while visiting Gene. We cooked many meals and enjoyed visiting little coastal towns. Gene and I spent part of our honeymoon with Barry and Susan. We visited between Calgary , Victoria and St John’s. He will be missed. All our best to Susan and the family.

I heard from some friends in Ottawa today about Barry’s passing and I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to all his family. Like Michele and Malcolm Campbell I knew Barry from high school in Camp Petawawa, those were some fun days back then.
I also went through nursing school with Barry’s sister Lorraine so my heart goes out to her today.

What a shock to learn of Barry’s passing. We served together in Regional Operations while I commanded 4 Canadian Ranger Patrol Group. We enjoyed several hunting trips together and also time at his home. Barry and Susan always treated me like family.

    Rest in Peace Barry

  • Don McKelvay, Maj (Retd)

Our heart felt condolences to all of Barry’s family. We served together in Germany both in 2 RCR and 3 Mech Cdo (Born in a Storm) and Buzz was a wonderful, competent officer. Unfortunately our paths never crossed again which is a very sad thing. He will be missed by many in several regiments that he served with.

  • Pat Rossiter

Our thoughts are with all of the Worth family on hearing of the loss of Barry. We served together in 2 RCR and 3 Mech Cdo. He was a fit and tenacious officer, and worked and played hard. He will be missed.

  • Jack English

I was so sorry to learn of Barry’s passing. Buzz was my 2IC in B Company of 3PPCLI in Work Point Barracks. He was a joy to serve with and a most capable professional officer who reflected all that was best about a Guards officer (said by a former Queen’s Own of course). I still remember the great times we had in Alaska serving under the Yanks — Barry impressed them all with his uncanny ability (and fitness) to perform a perfect “pukka sapper” — consuming a drink while standing on your head. It was my good fortune to have known him as a comrade.

    With sincere condolences,

    Jack English

  • Marlene, Ed Schardt & Family

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We think of Barry often and now he is at peace. Hopefully, he’s with Rod chatting it up. Take care and be strong.

  • Patrick Dillon. Maj (Retd)

It is with deep regret that I read of Barry’s passing. He was in the same section with me during our whole training at the Infantry School in camp Borden and was in the same room as me for a whole year. A great individual and character as well as being a good soldier. Served with him in Victoria in 3PPCLI and went SCUBA diving with him on may occasions.
    He will be missed.

  • Chris Snider, BGen (Retd)

It was with deep regret thatI read of Barry’s passing. I remember him as a keen soldier and dependable leader especially as the Prix Leclerc Team Commander with 3 Mechanized Commando at Baden, Germany in 1971. Maurine joins me in offering sincere condolences to your family.

  • Malcolm and Michele {Toop}Campbell

We were so sorry to hear of Barrys passing, our deepest sympathies to his wife and all the family. Malcolm and I attended General Panet High School at “Camp Petawawa” with Barry and his sister Lorraine in the early 60`s, and we have so many wonderful memories of happy times.

  • Wayne Martin

Truly sorry to hear that cousin Barry has passed away. I remember our adventures in hunting in the late fifties back at Grampa Martin’s in McKee, Quebec. Unfortunately the only thing we shot were the windows of the McKee train stop with our new pellet rifles – brings back lots of memories.

  • Randy Stowell LCol Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery

Barry and I were brother students at the Army Staff College, Kingston – spring 1981. He took me under his wing – as we worked hard, and on occasion enjoyed time at the bar. He was a hard and tough soldier – amazed me that he wore the Navy Clearance Diver insignia – very rare for an Infantryman. Barry and I rented a car for a day and spent time in Picton, where he had served as a Guards Officer. The buildings are now all gone, but at the time he showed me where he changed into his uniform in the morning [Guards Officers did not wear uniforms into or away from work!!!]… the Officers Mess still had the Bar built by British Air Commonwealth Air Training Officers during WW II. Barry [ or Buzz] was an officer that I missed later on during my service. He had a very positive impact on my own sense of being a soldier. He always loved dogs – he was tenacious and he was a gentleman and officer.

Dear Susan and all your family and to all of Barry’s family,

I’m so very sorry to hear about Barry. I am thinking of all of you and want you to know you are in my thoughts. Susan, they played the songs that you used to love listening to on your records yesterday on the radio. I remember how Janet and I listened avidly…seems like only yesterday…and here it was, a lifetime away. Life is so fleeting and so precious. I’m so glad you both enjoyed your life together and made important all those special moments. And soon enough you will meet again and you’ll be “Forever in Blue Jeans”.

    Love Karen
