May 1923 – February 2012

Jean was taken from us February 22, 2012 after living what she described as “a good life “. She leaves behind her loving husband of 54 years Don, son Stephen and daughter-in-law Mary Lou (Newbold). She is survived and dearly missed by brothers Charles, Albert (Gwen), David (Jessie) along with two generations of nieces and nephews. Jean focused her life on family, strong religious values and education. Jean spent 33 years in the classroom beginning her teaching career in Smithers and finishing as a much loved Art teacher at Shoreline Jr. Secondary. Jean’s classes were always full! Her passion for travel took her and Don all over the world, chaperoning on school band trips in the 1970’s and various cruises after her retirement. She especially enjoyed their trips to the Middle East and South America. The past few years for Jean were filled with various health issues which she fought with dignity and determination. Special thanks to Dr. Paul Kachan, Dr. John Kinahan, the Palliative Home Care team, especially nurse Andrea, the wonderful people of the Piercy Hotel and lastly the Victoria Hospice. A Memorial Tea will be held at McCall’s (1400 Vancouver St.) Wednesday, February 29, 2012 2:00pm. Donations may be made to Victoria Hospice or the charity of ones choice. Condolences may be offered below.

I taught with Jean at Shoreline when John Robertson was principal, in the mid-70’s. I remember her fondly as she was a dedicated teacher and made every effort to inspire her students. The art room posed many challenges for Jean, as conditions weren’t optimum, but she was organized, and had a vision of what she wanted to accomplish and wasn’t going to let that vision be ruled by something she had no control over! She was well-thought of by staff and students. I remember that she was always smiling and she loved to laugh.

Those were interesting days to be a teacher at Shoreline.
