Kwari, Johanna Indahwati (Tjhie Gien Nio) passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on July 7, 2012 to be with her Lord at the age of 98. Born in Surabaya, Indonesia on August 5, 1913, Johanna was predeceased by her loving husband, Wilhelmus, son, Paul and daughter, Josephine. She is survived by her children Joseph (Vonny), Carolina and Martinus (Yulia), daughter-in-law, Lita and son-in-law, Agustinus as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Johanna and Wilhelmus moved from Indonesia to Canada in 1974 to be with their son Paul and his wife Lita. They lived together for more than 35 years, during which time Johanna was an amazing grandmother to Paul and Lita’s children, as well as over 10 nieces and nephews who lived with Paul and Lita through the years.

Johanna was known to many as Oma Kwari, Bobo, Grandma and Emak. Although she didn’t speak the language, she was able to make many friends who were graced by her kindness and hospitality. Johanna was known for her amazing culinary skills which brought family and friends together on countless occasions. We will all miss seeing Grandma’s sweet smiling face in the kitchen.

A celebration of Johanna’s life will be held at the Royal Oak Burial Park Mausoleum on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 10:00am. Condolences may be offered below.
