John Allen Spriggs passed away peacefully in Victoria, BC on June 14, 2026, at the age of 88.
John is survived and dearly missed by his beloved wife of 64 years, Janis; his devoted sons, Paul (Bonnie) and Peter (Liz); his cherished grandchildren, Noah (Kristy), Holly, and Isabella; and his adored great-grandchildren, Jack and Violet. He is also survived by his dear brothers, Peter (Leny), Gordon (Peggy), and Martin (Ruth).
In 1948, at the age of ten, John and his family set sail from the UK, crossing the Atlantic by ship and landing in Halifax before traveling west to settle in Victoria, where he spent the remainder of his life. A talented and dedicated machinist by trade, John spent his career working at Victoria Machinery Depot (VMD) and later at HMC Dockyard Esquimalt. In his spare time, he was also a dedicated Scout Leader for the 1st Douglas Scout troop, mentoring and guiding youth over the years. Known for his great sense of humour, John brought laughter and warmth to everyone around him. Outside of his work, his true passion was being up at his cabin or out on the water. John was an avid power boater and fisherman. His absolute sanctuary was Ruxton Island, where he lovingly built a family cabin that served as the backdrop for countless weekends, holidays, and cherished family memories.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, July 26th, 2:00 PM at McCall Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

Baxter's Dear Spriggs Family,
John Spriggs was a true gentleman. Our family holds some of our greatest memories from the times we spent with John and his family.
John and my father, Ted Baxter, met while working at the Dockyard. As they both had sons of a similar age, their relationship evolved through John’s incredible scouting leadership. John was a brilliant, patient, and calm teacher, and we were fortunate to be involved in the scouting programs he led.
The world has truly lost a gifted man. The Baxters would like to pass along our deepest condolences and best wishes to the entire Spriggs family.

Our condolences to the Spriggs family.
Upon purchasing 2 lots to build our homes, my sister and I rang the doorbell across the street to gain information about the neighbourhood. John and Janis greeted us with kindness. Over the past 10 years it was such a joy to run into John on the many occasions when he was working diligently on their beautiful and well kept property. It was obvious to us that John (and Janis) were lovely, kind, and fun people.
It was a pleasure to know John and we will always think of him when we look out our window. His charming personality will be missed.
