John passed peacefully at Veterans Memorial Broadmead care home after a 7-year battle with a series of strokes and heart disease, age 85.

John was born in Venlo, Netherlands to Hubert and Anny Huizinga. In 1953, the family, including John and his younger siblings Mary, Sylvia and Gilles immigrated to Canada and settled in Winnipeg Manitoba.

In 1959 John joined the RCN where he served for 25 years as an engineer, retiring as a CPO.

John is predeceased by his parents, his son John and niece Susie.

He is survived by his wife Lois, his children Gerald (Jennifer and son Devin) Brenda (widow of John and sons Travis and Colton) Jacqueline (and son Shane). He also leaves five nieces April, Jackie, Lorraine, Soliel and Anne and cousins in the Netherlands Renee (Betsy), and Henry (Anneke).

In retirement, John was happiest in his home workshop in Maple Bay building furniture or traveling with his wife Lois. Their travels began with many house exchanges to Europe followed by snow birding in their RV spending winters in the USA and Mexico. This was a time of making many lasting friendships.

We have many people to thank for John’s health care. He was fortunate to be a patient of Dr Tom Rimmer for many years and have the help of the Cowichan community health care. We must thank the staff of the hospitals where John was a frequent patient; Cowichan, Nanaimo, VGH and Royal Jubilee. Finally, a heartfelt thank you to the caregivers at Veterans Broadmead care home.

Thank you, Brenda, Andryia and Anne for the help once John passed.

John wished no formal service.

Condolences to the family may be made for the family below.
