August 31st, 1922 – March 11, 2011

A wonderful father, devoted husband, avid hiker, amazing calligrapher, socially engaging and active, elevating the groups and organizations he belonged to.

He joined the RCAF forces in December 1941. He completed 18 missions over Germany with the RAF Pathfinder forces. He was one of four survivors when his plane was shot down 65 kms. north of Nuremberg March 31, 1943. He was interned as a POW for 13 months until liberation in 1945.

Scouting and the outdoors were his career and passion. He contributed much as an executive with the Boy Scouts and the Junior Forest Wardens, helping youth gain self-reliance, knowledge and access to the great outdoors.

One of the highlights of his life was a trip around the world in 1967. At the height of the Cold War era he travelled across Russia on the Trans-Siberian railway. He loved the Hawaiian Islands and travelled there many times with Hazel and latterly Jeannie Reith. But it was in the wilderness of British Columbia that he found his true vocation, from exploring ocean shorelines to majestic mountain peaks.

In 2003 Jack was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal for his exemplary contribution to the community.

Instrumental in opening up Garibaldi Park to youth organizations, he climbed many of the peaks and it is there on Panorama Ridge that a plaque is located bearing his name – a place of great beauty and grandeur where his ashes will be spread.

A Funeral Service will be held at the BRENTWOOD BAY UNITED CHURCH, Saturday, March 19th at 2:30 pm, 7162 West Saanich Rd., Brentwood Bay V8M 1P6. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the church. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.McCallBros.com.

My deepest condolences. I am sad to say that I just learned of Jack’s passing. He was a remarkable man who I was able to share many a hike with. I remember him as a kind, caring and wise role model for many of us younger hike leaders. He truly was a mentor for so many.

    Dear Linda, Paul & Jack,

I was very sad to hear of the passing of my good old friend Jack. I have only just heard the news via our Scouting friend in Ladysmith. I had hoped to get to Victoria early this spring to have a visit with Jack. We have been Scouting friends for at least 50 years. I had no idea that he was as ill as he was. If any of you are ever up this way drop in or contact me at Wayside Press. I am truly sorry that I have lost a good friend.

    Love Kay

My family appreciates hearing from the Vet assoc and the kind call that was received by my mother. We all share in your loss, my father and yours attended to many veteran gatherings together, and I recall Dad telling my about the pleasure he got when they were together. I found it interesting the numerous similarities in the two of them, other than the shared experience of being POW’s, their love of the outdoors, trains, travel and even Boy Scouts, no wonder Dad enjoyed his time with your father.

I am sure that they are both at peace, and I am sure that your family can find peace as well.

A question if you do not mind, did Paul attend Mt. Doug. in Victoria?, if so, we may have gone to school together.

I wish your family peace and good memories of what your father has left you with.

    Dear Paul and Linda:

I read with great sadness about the passing of your father, Jack, last week. I certainly have many memories of being over at Bromley and being engaged by Jack, whom I always referred to as “Mr Scrivener” as he seemed to command that kind fo respect. My fondest memories were of Jack in his Scouting uniform which he always wore very proudly.
Kareen and I extend our condolences to you both. Our thoughts are with you.

    Dear Linda, Paul and Jack,
I met your Dad several years ago through the Aircrew Association. We found we had a lot in common. We were both born in 1922, we both trained as navigators in the air force and we both became Lancaster navigators in Bomber Command. Your Dad’s Lanc was shot down; mine was merely shot up so I survived without becoming a POW. We chatted about this often over lunch.
For a while we attended Brentwood United and Mary and I would sit with your Dad for the service. We considered him a colleague and friend and we will miss him. We hope to attend tomorrow’s service
We offer you all our sincere condolences in your loss.
    Ken and Mary Brind
