John Stanly Scheeren

June 28, 1956 – December 21, 2020

June 28, 1956 – December 21, 2020

It is with the deepest burden of sorrow that we have to announce the loss of the pillar of our family on December 21, 2020. After a tragic work place incident, John gave it everything he had and fought bravely for 3 weeks in Vancouver General Hospital, finally succumbing to his traumatic injuries. John was born and raised in Victoria on June 28, 1956.

He eventually would marry his high school sweetheart and best friend, Lesley, and after 42 years of marriage they were both very proud of the family they had created. John (Dad) says goodbye to Lesley, his sons J.R. (Kate), and Robbie (Patti) and their son, his beloved grandson whom he cherished, Brooks. As much focus John put into his work, his true passion was his Family and being a true provider and role model, always committing to “doing better than his best.”

As in life and career, with most people that knew him, John was known for his work ethic and attention to detail to ensure everyone stayed on task, and most importantly, that everyone was safe doing so. He loved his career in the Construction Trade beginning the journey in 1975. During that time, he was involved in hundreds of projects (mostly local in Victoria) and mentoring many young people in the trades.

John was an advocate for education in the trades as well, and became Gold Seal Certified in 2013. He put so much effort into his career and absorbed the weight and responsibility attached to his position with an unwavering professionalism. He leaves behind so many friends whose lives he touched and truly cared about.

The family wants to send our most sincere and gracious appreciation to the doctors, nurses, and care providers at Vancouver General Hospital for showing our dad compassion and dignity in his final days. The level of care you offered and were able to extend reached our hearts especially when we were not able to be at his side. We know he felt our strength and love through you all.

The Scheeren Family would like to extend an invitation to all the people he had touched in honoring John at his farm in Metchosin, BC. A date has not been selected at this time due to restrictions, but we look forward to seeing all of you soon, and sharing in his memory.

“We love you dad, and we will make you proud”

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

  1. I had the pleasure of serving John several times at Shine Cafe. He was always so kind, respectful, and genuinely cared about the staffs well-being. Through our brief conversations, I could tell how much he loved his job and his family. Myself and my coworkers were heartbroken to hear of the tragic accident and his passing. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. We miss you John. Rest in peace.

  2. It is so hard to accept that you are gone and our hearts are broken for Lesley and family.

You were a real gentleman, a wonderfully talented family man, and friend. A role model to our children and the person we turned to when we needed advice on anything construction related. When Freya was born, it was you and Lesley who spent the night looking after Max, a bond which only strengthened with time.

John – we will always treasure the moments we shared with you, whether it was a deep discussion over a beer, your laughter over a festive feast, admiring your stunning work on your home, or just eating pizza.

Lesley, John once told us that should we need him he would be there for us. We are making the same promise to you.

  3. “As a tradesman, you are only as good as the work you did today. Do your work well and you will work tomorrow.  Remember no one has to call you back. Let your work speak for itself.”

One quote I repeat to my self everyday.
John taught me more in one phrase than any other man could teach in a life time.

  4. I am so heartbroken for your loss. John was a remarkable human being who left an incredible impact on everyone that was fortunate enough to get to know him. I loved John like a father and the world won’t be the same without him. He will never be forgotten.

I need you to know what you have done for me.  I met you when I was 9yrs old, Rob and I were talking by the new playground at St. PATS (1993ish).  Rob yelled hey Dad and your smile could have lit up the city.
Over the years  I got to experience what it was like to be a member of your family.  At a time of difficulty in my life you and your family accepted me.  You offered me the opportunity to experience and understand love and trust.

John, your two sons are the two best people I know.  Rob and JR will love and protect the family.  You can rest at peace knowing your were an inspiration to me and many others.

    I love you guys

  6. My family and I were so shocked and saddened to hear of Johns passing. We were neighbours for many years and were good friends. 7. Dear Lesley and Family

I only met John a handful of times, but in those few visits, I was fortunate enough to witness the warmth of his generosity and huge heart, the strength of his spirit and character, and also his wonderful sense of humour. It was most obvious to me that his family meant the world to him, and that he took great pride in looking after those who were dear to his heart, including his beloved dogs. I enjoyed some good conversations with John. I felt genuinely welcomed into your home, as if I was part of the family. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. My sincerest condolences to you, Lesley, and your family. You and John will remain in my thoughts and prayers, and I wish you all much love and light at this most difficult time.

  8. Lesley and family. I am so dearly sorry to hear of Johnny’s passing. Words cannot express the sadness of his loss. I send my heartfelt condolences to you all in this truly difficult time. Lesley – Betty-May just informed me today, Jan 3, of Johnny’s passing and I will see you soon after I arrive home from my trip. I am truly heart broken. Betty and I have so many fond memories of our time together, in the recent few years. I will miss my nephew, Johnny sorely. Love Uncle Arnold.
