Our beloved Joe passed away suddenly but peacefully on March 20, 2012 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital surrounded by his family and many lifelong friends. Joseph is survived by his sons, Joel and Ryan Carriere; brother, Tony; sisters, Holly, Lori and Mary Lee and many other close family and friends. Joe was born in Hamilton, Ontario on July 9, 1952. Joe moved to Victoria, BC in his early 20’s looking for his dream and found it at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel . He immediately fell in love with the wilderness of the Westcoast and the nature he surrounded himself with. Joe will be most remembered for his love of family, kindness towards others, his many friends, his constant hard work and his love of life and undying devotion for the Hamilton Ti-Cats and Montreal Canadiens.
A service will be held on Saturday, March 24th 1:00-4:00 pm at MCCALL BROS. FUNERAL HOME, Johnson & Vancouver Streets in Victoria, B.C. Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Scott Norris I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Joe. Although I never knew him personally I do remember him and his kind presence. Coincidence. The photo of Joe has a photo of the same beer tower I bought online from the snug. It is now in my bar at home. This will always be a great memory reminder. Scott Norris.(Possibly the new OBBH gardener).

Eric Stofer The mold was truly broken when they made you Joe.
Thanks for all the great afternoons and evenings spent shooting the shit at the Snug. Old school was a phrase tailor- made for you, your work ethic and your personal one to one style. You always made me feel welcome and I looked forward to the day I’d see you behind that bar again but, you are more than that. Thanks for the lessons.
My wishes go to your family, especially your boys who you so often spoke of. Joe’s bar indeed it was. See you another time my friend

Anna Mchale As someone who worked with Joe for at the hotel 16 years I can not tell you how shocked and saddened I was to hear this difficult news.
While Joe loved the Oak bay Beah Hotel all of us there knew that his two sons were his pride and joy, he would look forward for months to his yearly visits with them.
At this difficult time please know our thoughts are with all of the family.
The Snug will never be the same without Joe but I am sure we will all have thoughts of Joe every time we walk in the door.
A dedicated father, hard worker and all round good guy and what a smile!
We will miss you Joe.Anna & Gary

Pam Grant Words truly fail me here.
Joe was an excellent bartender –part showman, part clown, part psychiatrist –always ready with a kind word –who also poured a perfect pint and made the best martini in Victoria.
I was honoured to be at the Snug on its final night, and I remember how Joe was adamant that no one be sad because we would all be back soon. It may have been the Walker’s hotel, but I think even they would agree that in many ways, the Snug was Joe’s bar. It simply won’t be the same without him.
I will never forget what a truly good man and a loyal human being that Joe Smith was. I offer my sincerest condolences to his family and his other friends.

Vicki Pearson (Porada Design Group) My thoughts are with all those that Joe meant so much to. Joe had a way of welcoming all and it was very easy to call Joe “friend”. I will always remember him as my personal guard during my stormy night stays at the Oak Bay Hotel when it was closed. Thank you Joe for keeping me company and allowing me to be another of your many friends.
-
Anna Chretien I am shocked and saddened. My husband and I knew him well from the old Snug and I ran into him at the Victoria Golf Club last year. He recognized me and updated me on his current work situation with the Walker family and that he would be in the new Snug. I was very pleased to hear that.
I was reminded of what I had always thought when in the Snug, what a thoroughly nice gentleman.
I can only offer my condolences to his family on their loss.
-
David Holberg (Ecolab Ltd) Although I didn’t know you that long Joe you had a lasting impression on me from the day I met you. That wonderful smile and how you greeted me on every call. You were a true gentlemen. My thoughts are with you. Lets hope there is a Snug up there.
