Josie was born on the Isle of Man in a house named “Cartref”, which means “a friendly home”.  The house is on a hillside with a distant view of the sea.  She was inspired to build her last home, with her loving husband, Malcolm, on a hillside above Sidney with a view of the sea and called it Cartref where they lived for many years and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Her four children were all born in different cities across Canada, Gwendolyn May (Chad), Neil Douglas (Miriam), Marianne Phyllis (Paul) and James Mark (Julie).  Her grandchildren, Eryn Silva, Sarah Josephine (Simon), Elyse Josephine (Joёl), Jordan Ryan Malcolm, Michael James, Phillip Alexander and Claire Meredith, brought great joy to her life.

She enjoyed traveling to the British Isles with each family in turn to show them where she spent her early childhood.

She liked words and language and was always glad to read to her children, grandchildren and great granddaughter, Josephine Marianne.  She was also an excellent seamstress, baker and knitter and lovingly shared these talents with her children and grandchildren.   Her generosity didn’t stop with her family but also spread to her community both local and afar.  Most recently, Josie knitted teddy bears for children in distressed areas around the world.

Josie was a lifelong Christadelphian and was very active in Sunday School and youth activities and helped in the completion of two church buildings and a senior’s residence.

Thanks to Josie’s doctors, nurses and home care workers for their care and to her many friends for their expressions of sympathy.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the BC Cancer Foundation (Vancouver Island Centre) 2410 Lee Avenue, Victoria, BC V8R 6V5.  Please request that the donation remain in Victoria.

A memorial service will be held on January 20th @ 2:00 pm at the Sidney Ecclesia, 2371 Oakville Avenue, Sidney.

I have had the very great privilege of being a close friend to Marianne Josephine’s daughter. Which gave me the opportunity to meet and get to know Josephine. I will keep with me always the memory of Josephine’s sense of humour, her quick wit and her kindness. It was a blessing to know her and it is a blessing to know her daughter who is also funny, intelligent and kind. May God bless you all.
