MEYER, Karl Thomas October 21 1955 March 1 2009 After a long courageous battle with Cancer, it is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear father, son, brother, “Papa”, uncle & friend. Karl is predeceased by his loving wife of 31 years, Donna. He will be sadly missed by his mother & father, Heinz & Mareeka Meyer; sister Cindy Ransom; his four children and their families Kirsten Longbottom (Steve), Katie Meyer (Brandon Gillis), Brandon Meyer (Chanrika) & Haley Meyer; granddaughters Emma, Kali & Aria; mother in law Florence Ross; sister in law, Sherry Black (Tom); Niece, Nicole Gait (Gary Taylor & Braedon); nephew, Darren Ransom; and many other close friends. Karl was born in Sudbury Ontario in 1955. He moved to Victoria in the late summer of 69′. He attended Mount View High School where he met Donna. They were married in November 1974 and had four beautiful children by 1983. Karl went to Electrical School where he got his Journeyman Electrical ticket. He worked with companies such as Heard Electric, Buckle Electric and Yarrows before starting his own company: Nu Line Electric. In 1998 he began his career at the Times Colonist in the mailroom. He enjoyed being a member of the mailroom family and greatly valued the special friendships he gained. Throughout the years, Karl made a special effort to be a huge part of his children’s lives. From swim meets, to hockey road trips, to basketball or lacrosse games; Karl was at every event. He would be timing, or score keeping, or on the bench coaching and providing encouragement. He had a knack for giving to those around him and wanted to make sure his kids had every opportunity to succeed. Donna and Karl made sure that the “Meyer Clan”, as he would say, were at every swim meet on the island, all summer long. Karl could be found playing bocce at lunch times or wearing an embarrassing see through swim suit in the parent relay just to be involved and embarrass his kids. He had an enormous heart and an infectious laugh that will not be forgotten. In 2001 Karl became a Papa to his first granddaughter Emma. She put that childlike sparkle back in his eyes; he loved to horse around with her and act like a kid again. He could take her on trips to the water slides and to Beacon Hill Petting Zoo, etc. He was ecstatic! Then came along her little “sissy Kal” and he was in his glory! Since Aria’s arrival in 2007, Karl has had three beautiful granddaughters to laugh with and to give him `kisses’ and `luv’s’ the girls always put a smile on his face. These girls will sorely miss their Papa, as there is no other like Karl. Despite Karl’s illness over the past couple of years, his determination and will to survive was amazing. Karl took pride in living life on his own terms; if the doctors told him not to walk, he would get on his bicycle and go for a ride. He is truly an inspiration to his family and those who knew him. A Celebration of Karl’s Life will be held on Sunday March 8th 2009 at 1:00pm. It will be held at McCall Bros. Funeral Chapel at 1400 Vancouver Street Victoria, BC. A special thanks to the nursing staff on 6C at VGH for their caring compassion and support to both Karl and his family over the past 15 months. Two very special doctors who have helped Karl over the past three years are Dr. Anthony Barale and Dr. Patrick McLeod; thank you so very much. Karl and family would also like to thank his companion, careworker & friend Morgaine Evans for all her love and support. Friendship is a beautiful thing.
