In loving memory…
Ludwig Wilhelm Rolf Ullrich died peacefully at his family home on October 21, 2023, in Victoria, B.C.
Rolf was predeceased by his loving wife, Brigitte Ullrich. He will be greatly missed by his four children, Susanne (Kenton), Annette (Jozef), Karl (Liz) and Stefanie (Tim); and 9 grandchildren (Nicholas, Alexander, Tatiana, Josephine, Emma, Heidi, Olivia, Genevieve and Andreas).
Rolf was born on July 24, 1928, in Bonn, Germany. After the war, Rolf spent three years as an apprentice gardener in Lake Constance followed by ‘ein Paar Wanderjaehre’ in Germany and Switzerland. He immigrated to Canada on the Arosa Star in 1955. Six months later, Brigitte, his wife-to-be of 66 years joined him.
Rolf started as a labourer in a lumber mill but soon transitioned to the tourist industry by buying a small motel on Gorge Road. He was an incredibly hard worker, very astute and willing to take risks. Although he grew his company over time, his original venture, the Robin Hood Motel, still stands today after 60 years in business. He was a man of integrity and principles – his word was his bond.
While he worked extremely hard, Rolf also knew how to enjoy life. He loved playing cards, especially Bridge and Skat. He was extremely knowledgeable about world affairs and enjoyed a good political debate. Nothing would bring him more joy than winning a chess game except for perhaps a great day on the stock market! He had a wonderful singing voice and loved classical music.
Last but not least, he was an incredible provider for his family. His responsibility towards his family came first and foremost as demonstrated through his love, generosity, and unconditional support.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Erna Heinicke who took such great care of our father and made it possible for him to live his final years in his home which he created with Brigitte and loved so much.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 18, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, B.C.

Dear Ullrich Family,
Chris and I would like to share with you our memory of Rolf Ullrich. We met him only a few times – and that was many years ago – once, when he and Brigitte visited us at our Sonnleiten Farm in Metchosin, and at last once again when we visited them at their home on Oldfield Road. No doubt, it was our common German back grounds, that immediately made us feel connected in some kind of kinship. On each visit, he impressed us as a lively, generous, articulate gentleman very likable and loved.
We are grateful for this memory, which will stay with us – even though he now is gone. Please accept our profound sympathy with your loss. We are sure his memory will live with you forever – as it does with us.Very sincerely,

We recall the very pleasant experience that we had with both Rolf and Brigitte some decades ago at our former 10-acre farm in Metchosin. Unforgettable was Rolf’s awe and overt appreciation upon their arrival of our organic farming operation but also the natural environment that we were so lucky to enjoy there.Everything that we have read in the recent obituary for Rolf strikes a cord from our all too brief engagement with him and Brigitte. Please take some solace in the fact that the measure of a person is not so much what they did, but the legacy that they leave behind. Knowing you, it seems very much like a job well done to us.

Barbara Schulze Newton Condolences to the Ulrich family from the Schulze family. Our late father, Bernhard, and Rolf were members of a skat group for many years, and the two of them were great friends for decades. Rolf had a wonderful laugh.

Brenda Brophy (Finnerty) I’m sorry for your loss and to hear of your mom as well. My mom and I often reminisced about our time at the Robin Hood for the 13 yrs we were there. It was a family that we were blessed to have been part of. My thoughts are with all of you as you celebrate your father and process this loss.

I have great memories working with the Ullrich family, coworkers, & seeing many returning guests each year.
