1963-2009
We are shocked to announce the sudden death of our dearest Marcia on May 23. She is survived by her parents, Laurence and Toni Sprangers; her beloved son, Lucas; and her dude, Nicky (Nigel). They are bereft without her, as are her sisters, Joanne, Jackie and Michelle, and her brothers, Mark and Laurence. Marcia was an artist who studied at Kwontlen College. She was a founding member of Leap, a group of women visual artists, collaborating on community art projects and group shows in Vancouver. Her paintings and sculptures were shot through with symbol and suggestion. In her last three years Marcia worked with the elderly at the Cridge Centre for the Family. She nurtured their physical and emotional health with true dedication and lots of laughter. Marcia also loved kids and animals. She entered their world and embraced them and they played with her. Marcia was a brilliant designer of clothes and costumes. She loved wearing them too. She was a consummate performing artist with moments of pure grace and divine comedy. Her costume parties at the Cridge were legendary. Marcia was also passionate about her involvement with the Luminara lantern festival. Marcia loved her son, Lucas, immensely, and he filled her with pride. Marcia found true love in the last four and a half years of her life with her dear fuddy duddy, Nicky. He adored his speckled pixie. Their love is eternal.

A Memorial Service will be held at MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson & Vancouver Streets on Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the SPCA or UNICEF.

Farewell, dear Marcia, and may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

    Dearest Sprangers Family,
I am sitting here with my father Johannes Sprangers. He is 78 years old and we are discussing family history. His uncle Piet moved from Breda, the Netherlands to Canada in the 50’s and a lot of the family are artists. I am curious to know if we are related. Warm regards Odette Sprangers

I was trying to get in to contact with Marcia. It is now May of 2011. A dear old friend from college and colleague in the arts (Leap). I have moved to Ontario and lost touch with her. I was trying to find her on facebook and came accross this news. I am shocked and deeply saddened by this news. She was a great woman with beautiful energy to offer the world. A superb artist always endeavouring new achievements. I will love her always. my deepest sympathies to her family and loved ones. And to Lucas – you were always so bright and so much fun to be around, a true legacy of your mother, may you carry on her fun loving spirit.

Marcia and I hung out together when we shared classes at Kwantlen.
We did a lot of laughing while discussing art and life. I remember Lucas and how much she loved him. I had reconnected with her through Facebook and I was looking forward to seeing her last summer. She said she wanted to come over…when I didn’t hear from her, I thought her life got busy and I had no idea, until now.
I sent her a birthday greeting on FB, but when I looked at her profile, I realized your loss and I’m so sorry.
My condolences to you all. I hope she never suffered. I will always smile while looking up at the twinkling stars, thinking of her eyes and sparkling smile. She was special and I’m very fortunate to have shared a bit of earth-time with her.

    Dear Marcia,
I am so sad that this is the occasion that brings me to reach out to you. We grew up together in Chilliwack, both with parents that Immigrated from Holland. We had many things in common yet,as the years went by, we lost touch. I wish I could have seen how happy you were the past 4 years, but it is comforting to know, that you had such wonderful people sharing those years with you. I’m not surprised that you touched so many other lives with your special quirky qualities, laughter, creativity and sensitivity. I will miss you dearly and my deepest sympathy goes out to Lucas, Nigel, and the entire Sprangers Family.
    Love, Cori Plante

My cherished friend Marcia…you’ve been a part of my life for so long, I am brokenhearted at the thought of losing you. We have held each others hands through life’s joys and sorrows, no matter the distance in miles between us. From the moment we met your smile and infectious laughter made their way into my heart. Your sweetness, generosity, and ability to see beauty in the simplest of things made me love you from the moment we met. Your friendship has been one of my life’s greatest gifts, and I will forever treasure the memories we share…may we meet again in the land of fairies and pixie dust.

My heart goes out to you Lucas, Nigel, and to Marcia’s parents, brothers, and sisters.

I was greatly shocked and saddened to hear that Marcia had passed away.
I am a member of the Gypsy Rovers Trio who regularly entertain at the Cridge Centre, where Marcia has been the entertainment coordinator. Marcia was always very welcoming and attentive to our needs and only two weeks ago was telling us that she was leaving the Cridge Centre to have a break. During the break she said that she was planning a trip to the Queen Charlotte Islands with Nigel, whom I have known for many years as we were/are both educators.
My sincere condolences go out to Nigel and the family. I am sure that the other members of the Gypsies feel just as shocked and devastated as I do.

The world is much less sparkly place without Marcia. She was a sweet, funny, talented, effervescent personality. My deepest sympathy go out to Lucas and Nigel and Marcia’s family. I first met Marcia in the Luminara lantern festival, where she Nigel and their friends filled the studio with hilarity and fake coins.

She became a valuable member of the Luminara staff, and continued on as beautiful and sparkly interactive performer. The trio of Marcia, Christobel and Dee as “The Weather Girls”, “Marie, Anne and Toinette” and the “flowers” have become an icon of beauty and creativity at Luminara, more photographed than possibly any other.

Marcia’s laugh filled a room, and her smile was brilliant. She is going to be greatly missed my her many friends.

I am sorry to miss the memorial service as I am in England with my family… but I will be there is spirit. Hugs to everyone who are saddened and shocked by this terrible loss as I am. xo Alice Bacon

To all those who loved Marcia, especially Lucas and Nigel, the world will be a less creative, less imaginative, less beautiful, and less joyous place without Marcia in it. She touched the lives of all who had the opportunity to meet her in a most positive and far-reaching manner.

She will be sorely missed by all: children, animals, artists, family, friends, colleagues, her elderly friends at the Cridge, and her loved ones.

As Emerson said, “… to have accomplished a task,/ whether by a healthy child,/ a rescued soul, a garden patch,/ or a redeemed social condition;/ to have played and laughed with enthusiasm/ and sung with exaltation;/ to know that even one life has breathed easier/ because you have lived;/ that is to have succeeded.”

    Marcia truly succeeded.
