Margaret Power passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on December 10, 2016. Margaret was born and educated in Saskatoon where she graduated from Bedford Road Collegiate in 1951 and Saskatoon City Hospital in 1954. She worked as a Registered Nurse in Swift Current and Royal Columbian Hospital, New Westminster, BC before returning to Saskatoon, and then joined her family in Victoria in 1959, where she worked at St Joseph’s Hospital. Margaret maintained her relationships with the City Hospital Nurses Alumni and regularly attended reunions.
Margaret was active in sports and an avid curler through her life, including playing with the Victoria Curling Club. She took a particular interest in the Welsh Corgi Club in Victoria and the Vancouver Island Dog Fanciers Association helping to organize many events. She especially enjoyed the company of her own Irish Setters and took great pride in each of their championships. Margaret was passionate about her projects and the tasks she set for herself were always carried out with great success.
Margaret loved to travel. Her favourite place to be, other than Victoria, was her father’s birthplace, Edinburgh and the Scottish countryside. She attended St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church since coming to Victoria.
Margaret was a caring person, looking after her mother, Ellen, at home until her death in 2007 and always had time for, and interest in her nieces, Linda (Finlayson) and Andrea (Fong) and her nephew, Bruce (Fong).
Margaret was pre-deceased by her parents, Walter and Ellen (Hutchinson) Power in 1986 and 2007. She is survived by her sister, Barbara (Leonard) Fong, Nanoose; her brother, James (Reid Gilbert) Power, West Vancouver; her nieces, Linda (Scott) Finlayson, Andrea (Bateman) Fong, Victoria; her nephew, Bruce (Lee-Ann) Fong, Parksville and her grand nephews, Nolin and Logan Fong and Sean and Jack Bateman.
Margaret’s family expresses appreciation to her many friends and neighbours who were so helpful and considerate in the past several years. In particular, thank you to Kathy Campbell and Donna Guns.
Margaret will be missed, dearly, by everyone who knew her, most especially, by her sister, Barbara and her brother, James.
At Margaret’s request, there will be no funeral. An urn interment will take place at Ross Bay Cemetery at a later date.
Condolences may be offered to the family below.

The Savoies Such an empty place there’ll be now at Island shows….no better friend, no better sense of humour, no harder worker and supporter of shows, and dogs. She was the first person I’d look for when we arrived…always had a good and funny tale to share. Yvon and will miss her dreadfully.

Lawrence Collins Alas, I have lost a dear, dear friend. Margaret and I spent many hours on the phone and at her house. I recently took her for a day outing to visit Jean Westwood (VP of VIDFA) and we had a wonderful time. Whenever I was in the vicinity I would check to see how she was and she always had some little task that would lead into a pleasant visit.
When I heard of her passing I was in the process of leaving for Saskatoon for Christmas. I am currently spending that time at 613 Rusholme Road, the house that Margaret grew up in! Such a small world.
I hope that Sheila received the collapsible crate that Margaret had promised her for she was both generous and methodical.
May your journey be swift Dear Friend for Keilidh awaits you on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.
God Bless.

Pat Townsend I have known for many decades as she was talked into joining the Pembroke Welsh Corgi club by Marlene Collins and Peggy Jenkin. She quickly became our Secretary, a position she held till 2015, 5even though she never owned a Corgi! I was also her neighbour for 19 years at 222 St. Charles St. We had good times at meetings, Confirmation Shows and at Obedience trials. Many years ago, Margaret and I even travelled to an AKC national Obedience held at Los Angeles. I will personally miss phone calls to each other, I talked to her about 3 weeks ago. My hope that Margaret is in a better place, along with her Irish Setters.

Ina bureau President VIDFA It was with great sadness that I heard of Margarets passing.Margaret was a great asset to the Vancouver Islands Dog Fanciers Association were she was a member for many years. She will be sorely missed.Margarets knowledge of dog shows was amazing and she shared her knowledge with us all .She was also a very hard worker and would arrive at the Show hours ahead of us all.On A personal note Margarets Father came from Scotland and as I am also from there I have the opportunity to visit every year.Margaret couldn’t get enough she would quiz me on we’re I had visited and what I had seen .Although she was Canadian her heart belonged to Scotland. I would like to conclude with the words of a great poet Robbie Burns. AN HONEST MAN LIES HERE AT REST
THE FRIEND OF MAN THE FRIEND OF TRUTH
A FRIEND. OF AGE AND GUIDE OF YOUTH
FEW HEARTS LIKE HIS WITH VIRTUE WARMED
FEW HEADS WITH KNOWLEDGE SO INFORMED
IF THERE’S ANOTHER WORLD HE LIVES IN BLISS
IF THERE IS NONE HE MADE THE BEST OF THIS

Laura Dowell So sorry to hear of Margaret’s passing. We worked together for many years at the general surgeons office. Margaret was dedicated to her work and family. She loved sharing stories of her brother, sister, nephew and nieces. I will miss her at our annual get togethers and will always remember her for her direct approach and honesty. With sympathy and love.

Pat de Jong / Wesley Fritz So sorry to hear of Margaret’s passing (Margie to us). She and my Mom, Kaye Fritz, were lifelong friends from Saskatoon. As best we could figure she and Mom were friends for over 70 years. Margie was at Mom’s memorial service on August 31 and it was good to catch up with her then. She curled many many years with my parents. They had lots of laughs and good fun. They teased Margie to no end but she took with with a little grumble and laugh. Margaret and I laughed in August that it was my Mom’s fault that Margie could never hit the broom because mom always told her that my Dad gave her too much ice so Mom would tell her to aim for his (Wes’) foot. Margaret said that must be why she could never ever hit the broom….!! Good memories of Margie Power…condolences to her sister, nieces and entire family

Sheila Lang It saddens us, the members of the Vancouver Island Dog Fanciers Association, to hear of Margaret’s passing. She was an integral part of our club for years and brought wisdom, experience and energy with her. She had a wealth of knowledge to share and shared cheerfully, and always with good humour.
We will miss her. RIP Margaret

Sandi Lovas Many happy memories sitting with Margaret ringside in conformation or listening to her commentaries while Kathy handled her beloved Irish Setters in Obedience. Always an honest opinion to share and always a giggle time when Margaret was around. An icon in the dog community here on the Island. She will be sadly missed by me and all that had the honour to know her. Godspeed Margaret…….
I am a fellow alumni of Saskatoon City Hospital. We all send our condolences and a small donation has been made in memory of Margaret from the Victoria Nurses Chapter to Saskatoon City Hospital. Margaret was an active member and very good at informing the younger members of our meetings. She will be missed.
