Margaret Jupp Gillingham

Margaret passed away peacefully on July 20, 2018, at the age of  97,  at The Heights at Mt. View in Victoria, British Columbia.  She was born in Seattle, Washington to Francis and Lillian (Neuenschwander) Jupp on August 28, 1920.

After finishing high school in Victoria, Margaret went on to a normal college, where she completed her teaching diploma.  She was a teacher in Salmon Arm, British Columbia during the 1940s.  After her marriage to John T. Gillingham, their family life began in Victoria.  In 1959, the family moved to Bozeman, Montana and then to Clemson, South Carolina.  She returned to her beloved Victoria in 1973, where she spent her remaining years.  Margaret was known by name to many antiques, pet store, and thrift shop owners.  She was a knowledgeable and passionate antique buff and collector of English and Oriental antiques.  Her greatest loves were her children and her home port, Victoria.

She is survived by her children: Ted (Nancy), Robin Woods (Tim), and Charles (Jill); grandchildren: Jennifer (Glenn) McKay, Alexis (Wes) Hawkes, and Miles, Nolan and Orrin Gillingham; and great-grandchildren: Carter, Collin, Rory and Owen McKay, Liam and Paige Hawkes, and Alice Gillingham.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Alan and Donald Jupp, her stepmother Ursula Edwards Jupp, and her stepsisters Josephine MacGregor and Nancy Hawkes.

The family will Celebrate Margaret’s Life at a later date.

We would like to thank the staff of The Heights at Mt. View for their kind and supportive care of our mother.

My sympathies to the family. I came to know Margaret when my wife and I were delivering for Meals On Wheels a few years ago. Margaret and I had the most interesting conversations about her collectible treasures scattered around her apartment. An artist friend of ours specialized in paintings of small rooms, and Margaret graciously allowed him to take photographs of her apartment. He made many paintings of those rooms, one of which I own, of Margaret sitting in her favourite chair in her living room with a glass of wine on the side table. I enjoy viewing this painting with many fond memories. Perhaps the artist might still have one painting.

My sincere commiseration to Ted,Robin and Charlie. In addition to having great knowledge of fine things the lady had a strong power of reason
and a remarkable gift of kindness. She was always one of my favorites.I am glad to have known that her children felt the same. With this this the history of our friendship while uplifting is saddened.

I was saddened to see the passing of Margaret. My condolences to your family. Margaret was my “across the room” roommate for four days in the hospital. From the first, I admired her wit, her grit, and her spirit. She also was not about to suffer fools gladly, but was gracious for the assistance she needed. I was happy to see she was able to return to her home at The Heights as I had hoped. All the best.
