It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Falvo.  She passed away peacefully at Veteran’s Memorial Broadmead Lodge on March 14, 2026, at the age of 97.  Maria was born in Amato, Italy on March 11, 1929, to Anna (nee Scarpino) and Anthony Romeo. She was the fourth oldest of eight siblings. Maria is predeceased by her parents; brothers Joe, Domenic and Oreste; sisters Raffelina and Concetta; sisters-in-law Mary Filippis, Rosina, Lugina and Rina Romeo; and brothers-in-law Tony Filippis, Santo Cristiano and Joe Ritrovato.

Maria moved to Canada in 1951 to marry her soul mate Joe Falvo, where they lived in Edmonton, Alberta for 26 years.  In 1977, Maria and Joe moved to Victoria for its milder winters. Unfortunately, their time in Victoria was short lived as Joe passed away quickly after being diagnosed with cancer in August 1989.

As her late husband worked for the Canadian National Railway Company, Maria had the opportunity to travel with her husband and daughter multiple times each year to visit relatives in Edmonton and Winnipeg. Always cherishing the wonderful times spent together.

Maria was blessed to have lived a life full of family and love.  She will be remembered for her gracious demeanour and caring soul.  Maria touched many lives with her love of storytelling and her warm, talkative nature.  She took great joy in creating a welcoming home, along with the meals and baked goods she lovingly prepared for family and friends. Maria also enjoyed crocheting and knitting, and in the summertime, could often be found tending to her gardens.

Maria will be greatly missed by her daughter Rosanne, son-in-law Ed, and her two granddaughters Cassandra and Abby who she was so incredibly proud of.  Maria will also be remembered by her sister, Antonietta Ritrovato, brother August Romeo (Caterina), and brother-in-law Mario Cisotto.  As well as the many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, extended family, and friends who gave her so much joy to be around and warmed her life throughout her days.

We would like to say a special thank you to all the staff members at the Veterans Memorial Lodge over the past two and half years for the care and support they provided Maria.

A Funeral Service and Reception will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, on Monday, March 23, 2026, at 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

I remember visiting with Maria and Joe in Edmonton when I was a child. Maria was dad’s cousin and sent Maria with his love notes to my mom when they were courting in Amato. Mom and Maria kept in touch like sisters until mom couldn’t use her phone anymore. I will always remember her as in the attached photo with her beautiful smile.
Sending heartfelt condolences to her family. May she rest in peace.
