1914 – 2009
Surrounded by her large and loving family, the beloved Furtado matriarch , Maria Paixao Costa passed away with peace and dignity on May 12, 2009.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Manuel in 1959 and her adored son, Manuel (Virginia). She is survived by her 7 children; Maria Adelina (Manuel), António (Manuela), Senhorinha (Virginio), Manuela (António), Isabel (Barry), Armando (Helena), Natalia (Vivaldo); her 27 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Maria was born on April 9, 1914 in Ponta Garça, Sao Miguel, Portugal and immigrated to Canada in 1967. She lived with her family until she moved into her Gordon Head home where she proudly lived independently for 30 years. Her home is where countless cherished memories were created and strong family bonds were formed, especially the “Sunday Nights at Vavó’s”. Never one with idle hands, she was passionate about her gardening, sewing, cooking and baking. She will be fondly remembered for her amazing example of unconditional love, endless generosity and incredible faith. The grandchildren will never forget her unique way of making you feel special, the huge picture wall of family and the unending supply of “gama”.

To our family’s queen Vavó for which our family stood strong and united, you are the foundation and inspiration to us all and will remain in our hearts and thoughts forever. Nossa querida mae e vavó, que nunca sera esquecida! Beijinhos e abraços!

    Someone once wrote:
    “There is a plan far greater than the plan you know;
    There is a landscape broader than the one you see.
    There is a haven where storm-tossed souls may go—
    You call it death — we, immortality.
    You call it death — this seeming endless sleep;
    We call it birth — the soul at last set free.
    ‘Tis hampered not by time or space — you weep.
    Why weep at death? ‘Tis immortality.
    Farewell, dear voyager — ’twill not be long;
    Your work is done — now may peace rest with thee.
    Your kindly thoughts and deeds — they will live on.
    This is not death — ’tis immortality.
    Farewell, dear voyager — the river winds and turns,
    The cadence of your song wafts near to me,
    And now you know the thing that all (humans) learn:
    There is no death — there’s immortality.”
    May the Peace of Christ be with all the family…always.

    I was so sad to hear of your Mom’s passing. I remember her years ago as a lovely and quite woman that loved her family very much. I remember learning how to say Merry Christmas in Portuguese … I had trouble trying to say it and she laughed and knew that I was trying.

    I am also sad to hear of Manuel’s passing, I am sorry I didn’t see it in the paper.

    May you be guided in your loss and know that one day you will all be reunited but until then, May God Bless.

    Our dear Vavo…it’s as close to impossible as it gets, to describe what an incredible soul you are – if there is perfection, then you are a shining example of that. We will forever take with us, for all the days of our lives, your incredible humanity, sweet & gentle love, and your unconditional love & acceptance of people of all walks of life, and see that we inherit these amazing qualities from you, and in doing so, keep your memory and legacy alive. To us, you are as devine as one can be, and not a day will go by that you won’t be in our thoughts and floating in our hearts. We are at Peace that you have finally been reunited with the love of your life, Manuel, and with our dear & incredibly missed dad, your beautiful son, Manuel. We miss you more than you’ll ever know and heaven has just welcomed wisdom like never before – With all our love in the world, Tara, Libral, Hazen & Vienna…XOXO
