August 12, 1920 – October 24, 2013.

Marjorie passed away peacefully at The Oak Bay Kiwanis Pavilion in Victoria on October 24th, 2013 at the age of 93.

Predeceased by her beloved husband JR-James Roland, brothers Winston, Errol, and Ronald. Marj will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Dawn, son Timothy, daughter-in-law Debbie, and the grandsons she adored, Kevin Andrew and Thomas James.

Born in Jamaica in 1920, the stories of her childhood years there captivated and entertained all who were blessed to hear them. After the war, in her early twenties, she travelled to New York where she studied for a time at the Julliard School of Music in singing before moving to Toronto where her brother Winston lived. It was there that she met and married the love of her life James Roland Hughes, and together they moved to Ottawa where they lived for 25 years and raised their family. In 1981 they fulfilled their long held dream to retire to the West Coast where they built their retirement dream home overlooking the glorious ocean and mountain views which were always so special to Marjorie. Marj and JR enjoyed ten happy years of retirement on the island until JR passed suddenly in 1991 after 35 wonderful years of marriage. Maggie’s loving and endearing personality touched the lives of all the people she met, and she will be dearly missed by the many close friends she has here in the Saanich Peninsula, Victoria area and elsewhere.

Visitation will be held at McCall Brothers Chapel- 1400 Vancouver Street, Victoria on Sunday October 27th between 2 and 4 pm.

A Graveside Funeral Service will be held at Royal OakBurialPark at 1pm Monday October 28th.

Flowers gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kiwanis Oak Bay Pavilion where she resided these last two years under the exceptional care of the most wonderful staff that one could ever imagine. Condolences for the family may be offered below.

We are so sad to hear of Aunt Marjorie passing. Although many years have gone by that we have not been in touch we have often thought of her and was up to date through other family members. For me I have such wonderful memories, times in JA and in Canada. All our love and comfort at this time to Dawn & Tim Patricia and Agnes.

I recall Marjorie with fond memories of her love of music, her insightfulness about others’ situations, and her willingness to share how much she loved her family. Always interested in learning new things, hearing others’ share their life experiences and always extolling the love she had and the life she lived with her husband and partner in life, whom she missed dearly. Her time with us, at the SHOAL Centre in Sidney, was enjoyable and she lit up many faces whenever she’d reminisce about her family, her career, and her travels. Thank you Marjorie for your special gift of making people smile and look at the bright things in life. It’s time for you to shine now in the heavens beside your beloved husband. Blessings to you Tim and Dawn at this difficult time.

Tim – So sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. We remember how delightful a person she was and how easy it was to visit with her the times that we met her and how proud she was of all three of you boys. Our thoughts are with you, and Dawn, too.
