Marty passed away suddenly at Victoria General Hospital from complications caused by an infection.

He is survived by his loving partner, Pat; her daughters, Kristie (Corey) and Laura; and his beloved grandchildren, Nico and Sienna. Marty will also be deeply missed by his siblings Sybil, Marie (Mike), and David (Caroline); his sister-in-law Lynn; many nieces and nephews; and the wonderful friends who became his family here in Canada.

Born in Manchester, England, Marty moved to Canada in 1977. After working various jobs, he began a long and dedicated career with BC Transit.

Marty loved sports — especially tennis and golf — but his true passion was soccer. He played indoor soccer at the YMYWCA for many years and with his team, Bays United. His teammates and their wives became lifelong friends and extended family. He also shared many happy times with longtime rivals and great friends known as the Duncan guys.

Please join us to celebrate Marty’s life on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at the Uplands Golf Club, at 3:00 pm

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

There are no words that can adequately describe the sadness of Marty’s passing to those that knew and loved him.
For our extended brotherhood of soccer players, Marty was that loveable character that everyone gravitated towards. Funny, entertaining, and forever kind. He was always the first one to lend a hand, jump in and volunteer, and leave you feeling so privileged to be counted amongst his close friend group.
From the early days of SVICSA, our over 40s summer league, the many tournaments Marty was present, and to the many kids that Marty coached over the years, he was one in a million and will be sadly missed.

A TRUBUTE TO MY BROTHER MARTIN
Martin is the second eldest of six –
Margaret Martin Sybil Chrus David and Marie, was a treasured son of William Joseph and Winifread Langfield, and a much loved brother, uncle and friend.
Growing up in a large family gave us a lifetime of memories, laughter and love, when Martin immigrated to Canada he was deeply missed, but distance never weekend the bond we shared. Each of us made the journey to visit him, and we cherished the rare but special times when he returned home to Manchester.
He leaves behind a loving family and a lifetime of beautiful memories.
    He’s forever in our hearts.
    LOVE YOU BROTHER

My brother Martin and I were very close as children and up to the time he moved to Canada. Our eldest sister was a lot older and the youngest 3 were babies so he got the task of taking me with him, wether that was out to play or the swimming pool or out with dad on our Sunday trips or even just the 2 of us on the train from Manchester to Wales – dad was Welsh. I have so many happy memories of those times and of my visits to stay with him in Canada. He was a kind, witty and funny man, I’m sure everyone who knew and loved him will miss him dreadfully. Life is so sad right now. Sleep tight Martin. Your sister Sybil.

We are now one person down in the area of good humour and good will towards our fellow man.
Marty always had a joke to tell ……one day I was walking along Arbutus road when a bus stopped along side me and the driver (Marty) called out to me “hey Hook, what’s the difference between beer nuts and dear nuts. Beer nuts are $2.50 and dear nuts are under a buck.” As the bus pulled away, I could hear bus passengers laughing. Thanks for bringing so much laughter into my life.

So sad that Marty is gone: no more commiserating about Man. U’s fate. No more funny stories and reminiscences of travels to far-off places and being the winning team. No more rides to Friday coffee and sorting out the world. Marty was a true and generous friend. Heartfelt condolences to Pat, his friends and relatives in the UK and Canada. He will be fondly remembered and we’ll miss him.

  • John Garvey

Marty played soccer on a Victoria men’s veterans team who played an equivalent team of “has-beens”, Duncan FC, half a dozen times per year. Our teams played summer and winter, with the after-match celebrations being the highlight of everyone’s month. While the quality of play was very good, no one could remember the score by the time the evening was over! The close friendships created over the years that these players got together were truly memorable. Marty was the heart & soul of these occasions, and our Duncan team send sincere condolences to his family & his teammates. John Garvey.

Marty was unfailingly kind and considerate, thoughtful, funny and quick-witted. To be his friend was a privilege and we will never forget him. It’s hard to believe he’s no longer part of our lives. Our condolences to Pat and his extended family. We grieve with you.
One special memory was when Marty volunteered to be the driver for ten women wanting to visit the Saanich wineries (he’d love that description). He entertained us throughout a wonderfully sunny afternoon, complete with never-ending funny stories and witty comments. He even did a complete change of clothing into perfect chauffeur gear during one of the ‘waits’ in Sidney where he went shopping. None of us will ever forget that happy day. Thanks for the memories Marty.

  • David and Kyra Fairbotham

Coming from Blackpool, Marty from Manchester was a very special friend to me, he had such a wonderful sense of humour (many jokes about Blackpool rock and chip butties), a great teammate at Bays, and a wonderful guy to have along on football trips to places like Hawaii and Melbourne. He was always generous, I still have music discs he burned because he liked the songs, and he was a font of knowledge on UK TV programs to watch with some weird software he used! He touched so many peoples lives. To Marty’s family and friends, please accept my and Kyra’s sincere condolences, we’re very sorry we can’t attend the celebration of life as we are overseas.

Unexpected and sad news hearing of Marty’s passing.
I worked with Marty at BC Transit for nearly 20 years.
A wonderful, funny guy and a great colleague. Someone you could always count on.
We were soccer teammates and rivals over the years. Either way we had a lot of fun.
Marty was passionate about soccer. He was competitive but always enjoyed a beer and a laugh after the game.
My sincere condolences to Marty’s family. He will be missed!

  • Ignace

My sympathies to all of Marty’s family and friends. I’ve been fortunate to have played with him and against him. And been at the end of some of his barb’s. But more so, I’ve heard some memorable stories from him and a few involving him. Safe travels Marty.
