It is with overwhelming love and sadness that on the afternoon of November 18, 2016, we announce the passing of Mary Symons. Mary was surrounded by her family when she passed peacefully at Victoria Hospice following a courageous battle with cancer. Mary is survived by her dear sisters, Margo Fleck (Colin), Elizabeth Hayward (Steven); brother-in-law, Michael Chornoby (sister Patricia) and her many nieces and nephews; predeceased by her loving sister, Patricia Chornoby (Michael) and her mother and father Betty and George Malenfant.
Mary was born and raised in Victoria, BC, graduated from St. Ann’s Academy and is retired after a dedicated career with the BC Public Service. She enjoyed baking, shopping, restaurant outings and weekends in Brentwood Bay with her nephews “the boys”.
Mary would like to thank her caregivers Brian and David and her special neighbour Maryann, “I would like to thank them for all they have done for me”.
Mary will be remembered as a caring, generous and accepting person who was very thoughtful and loved others unconditionally.
Mary is grateful to all of her physicians, nurses, staff and volunteers who cared for her at Victoria Hospice and at the BC Cancer Agency.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Victoria Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation, 1952 Bay Street, 4th Floor, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada V8R 1J8
A service will be held at St. Joseph the Worker Parish at McKenzie Avenue and Burnside Road on Friday, November 25, 2016 at 1:00 pm. A tea will follow in the Parish Hall.

Charlotte Van Clyke I am so very, very sorry to hear of Mary’s passing. We lived up the street from the Malenfant family on Old Esquimalt Rd, attended Mass at Queen of Peace and went to St. Anne’s together. Mary and I have run into each other over the years and have always enjoyed a good chat and a giggle. She was so supportive to me while my sister, Lynne ,and also Mary’s friend in childhood, was fighting cancer and passed in May. It is one of the hardest things in the world to lose a sibling as we share secrets, have special memories and enduring friendship no matter what. I hope your memories of happier times will carry you through this sad time….

My condolences to the Family. May she rest in Peace!
