Mary died peacefully at home in Victoria on October 18th, 2025 at the age of 92. Mary, Maisie, Mama was born on March 21st, 1933 in Waterford, Eire.

Predeceased by her loving husband Bob of 64 years in 2020 and her son Kevin in 1989, sister Joan and brothers Paddy and Thomas; Mary will be lovingly remembered by her brother David and sister Bridget (Billy) in Waterford and sister Kathleen (Jimmy) here in Victoria; children, Avis, Thomas, Roberta (Lloyd), Don (Brigitte); grandchildren, John, Mary (Aaron), Tara, Dana (Eliska), Gabrielle (Jaimie) and Emily Rose; great-grandchildren, Hailey, Cesar, Sumiko, Lola, Nino, Mika and her many Irish family and friends.

Mary grew up in Waterford the second of seven children born to Thomas and Bridget McLawrence. In her early twenties she moved to England to work and
there she met her future husband, Canadian sailor Bob ‘Nick’ Nichol. They married in 1956 and by 1965, after the birth of their fifth child, Bob was posted
back to Canada where the family moved to Victoria, BC.

Mary was ahead of her time in her love of fashion and making her own clothes. She sewed and knit clothes for all of her children and grandchildren. She loved her garden, her plants, and all of nature. She loved all her kitties and all the babies. Mary’s life was shaped by her strong Catholic faith and her endless love of family.

Everyone who knew Mary will remember her warmth, her humor and her selflessness when it came to others.

A special Mass will be held at St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic church on Friday, November 14th, 2025, at 11:00 am. Followed by a private interment at Royal Oak Burial Park.

She truly had Irish eyes that always sparkled.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

I feel so fortunate to have had Mary as a sister-in-law. I shall miss our visits where we sat and shared stories. She recalled memories of her life in Ireland and together we talked about our shared memories of times together here in Canada. She always maintained a positive attitude. We had a few laughs and there were lots of smiles. Thank you Mary. Love Dea

Unfortunately, I was just getting to know Mary better in her later years.
Whenever I did see her during my short and infrequent visits, I always found her warm and welcoming. From our conversations it was clear that Mary always saw the best in people.

  • Your loving son Don & Daughter-in-law Brigitte

    Mary
    An angel on Earth
With eyes as blue as the sky.
    Gentle, wise, and endlessly kind,
Her presence was a quiet comfort.

She welcomed us into her soul with a single glance.
The beauty of her heart that gives freely.
Her spirit lives on in all of us,
In every memory that warms our hearts.

Though she has taken her place among the stars,
    Her light still guides us.
And we will carry her love with us,
    Always.
