Mike passed away suddenly at home on June 3. Mike is survived by his loving wife, Margaret, together for 51 years, and their sons Brent (Jen) and Scott (Zara). Mike was so proud of his role as Pa to his grandchildren Nando, Lewin, Soumayya, and Ilyas. Mike also leaves behind his close siblings Susan (Raymond), Kevin (Rhonda), and Lesley. He was also brother-in-law to Lorraine (Janice), Jenny (Gordon), and Robert (Sheila) and Uncle to his many nieces and nephews.
Mike was the firstborn son of Jack and Pat. He grew up in Fairfield and graduated from Vic High. From an early age, Mike had a love of sports. Whether he was on the field playing, coaching on the sideline, cheering in the stands or carrying the bag, his passion was evident. Mike’s basketball coaching history was far reaching across the city. The number of teams and athletes he coached is vast including his own sister, niece, and both sons. He left a lasting impact on the many players he coached.
Outside of the gym, Mike was an avid golfer. He started as a junior member at Gorge Vale and later moved to Royal Colwood. When he wasn’t playing, he also loved to caddy for David Mick & Jim Rutledge. The partnership that Jim and Mike had, led to worldwide travel and a longstanding friendship between the families.
Mike and Marg loved to vacation in the sun and had many trips to Hawaii with the boys, Las Vegas and cruises to the Caribbean. Just this past year, Mike enjoyed his first trip to Mexico.
Mike was a fixture at Willows Beach and could often be found on his long walks around Oak Bay. He never hesitated to stop and chat with friends new and old. Mike will be dearly missed and remembered by all his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
