November 7, 1951 - June 3, 2026

Mike passed away suddenly at home on June 3. Mike is survived by his loving wife, Margaret, together for 51 years, and their sons Brent (Jen) and Scott (Zara). Mike was so proud of his role as Pa to his grandchildren Nando, Lewin, Soumayya, and Ilyas. Mike also leaves behind his close siblings Susan (Raymond), Kevin (Rhonda), and Lesley. He was also brother-in-law to Lorraine (Janice), Jenny (Gordon), and Robert (Sheila) and Uncle to his many nieces and nephews.

Mike was the firstborn son of Jack and Pat. He grew up in Fairfield and graduated from Vic High. From an early age, Mike had a love of sports. Whether he was on the field playing, coaching on the sideline, cheering in the stands or carrying the bag, his passion was evident. Mike’s basketball coaching history was far reaching across the city. The number of teams and athletes he coached is vast including his own sister, niece, and both sons. He left a lasting impact on the many players he coached.

Outside of the gym, Mike was an avid golfer. He started as a junior member at Gorge Vale and later moved to Royal Colwood. When he wasn’t playing, he also loved to caddy for David Mick & Jim Rutledge. The partnership that Jim and Mike had, led to worldwide travel and a longstanding friendship between the families.

Mike and Marg loved to vacation in the sun and had many trips to Hawaii with the boys, Las Vegas and cruises to the Caribbean. Just this past year, Mike enjoyed his first trip to Mexico.

Mike was a fixture at Willows Beach and could often be found on his long walks around Oak Bay. He never hesitated to stop and chat with friends new and old. Mike will be dearly missed and remembered by all his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

A Celebration of Life will be held at The University Club of Victoria on West Campus Way located across from Lot 9 on Tuesday, June 23 at 1:00 pm.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

  2. Mike was a loved coach and made a massive impact on my life as well as so many others that he coached. He possessed a sincere love for people and mastered the beautiful balance of caring deeply while still challenging each person. I often find that the lessons he taught are even more profound now than they were in the moment. I have so many cherished memories of him. Thank you for everything Mike.

Sending lots of love and big hugs. He always lit up the room when I got to see him, and I will treasure those days I got to visit with him at the golf course or at a Metcalfe/Mawhinney event. He truly was such a special human, I can just picture that big smile, and we will miss him very much.
Sorry we will miss his celebration as we are headed to the World Cup game, otherwise we wouldn’t miss it.
