Mike was involved for a number of years as coach for Gordon Head Girls Fastball and more recently as his son’s lacrosse coach with Saanich Tigers.

  • Brian & Sharryll Thompson

    Nikki & family.
    We were very saddened to hear of Mike’s passing – what a shocker to hear of someone so young leaving us.
    While it has been some time since we saw you at our wedding, we have talked & thought about you and Mike often.
    Mike was a great guy, I consider it a pleasure & an honour to have had Mike work for me. Acosta was very fortunate to have had Mike work with them for the past 7 years.
    Mike was a very dedicated individual and gave his all to his work. Employees do not come along very often with the qualities that Mike possessed.
    Thinking of you.
    Brian & Sharryll

    Doreen,Nikki
    I am a friend of Mike’s from back in the 60’s….
    I first met Mike back around 1966/67 when my family moved to Townley st and Mike shortly afterwards became my best friend.
    The memories I have of Mike are..
    1) Mike and I playing with..Heather & Fred Dobbs and Brian Fowler who also lived on Townley st.
    2)The sleepovers that I had at Mike’s & on more than one occassion George (Mike’s dad) would wake us up in order for Mike to go to a practice or a game of some sport, usually hockey or laccross.
    3) Mike and I going to see Santa Clause at the old Hudson Bay on douglas st…back in those days the bay would go all out and basicly 1floor was done out as a winter wonderland with a train that took us all around the floor..I still have pics of Mike and I on the train.

    speaking of Mike and his sports and christmas..my family got a glass xmas ornement of a cubby boy on skates and a hockey stick back in the 60’s and we called it Micheal Deighton and it has hung our xmas tree every year since and we still have it
    4) the closeness and love that Mike had for his parents esp his mum Doreen!
    The last time I saw Mike in person was back in the late 70’s when he worked for Shopper’s drugs @ town & country and the very last time I saw Mike was when he was on..I think A channel afew weeks ago.
    Even though I have not seen Mike for years..I have often thought about him & what had happen to him in his life?
    I was glad to hear that he had gotten married and has 2 children which I am sure he loved more than anything else(except for maybe sports).
    My prayers and thoughts are with all of you (esp Doreen) during this time.
    I was honored to have known Mike and to have called him my friend.
    sincerely

    Nikki, Jacqui, and Tyler, I know there are no words to help at a time like this. But, know Mike was loved and will be missed. I knew him for 30 plus years, and he was always kind to me. He had a wicked dry sense of humour. A brilliant mind, and an all around good guy to everyone. Nikki, or Jacqui, if you need me for anything at all, just call. Love you guys. Lynne.

  • Liana Stephenson

    I first met Mike when we worked at Shoppers Drug Mart 30 some years ago. The minute I met Mike I knew he was an incredible Man and would always be a good friend. Jacqui was born the same time as my second child and our fellow SDM employees held a baby shower for both families. Our paths were to cross many times since SDM days and even again very recently as he so proudly shared wonderful stories about his children, Jacqui and Tyler, also giving me a play by play account of Jacqui’s trip overseas.
    I can’t begin to tell you how missed Mike will be, not only to me but to a huge community that all felt the same about this outstanding friend we all had.
    To his wife Nikki, my deepest condolences to you. To his children, Jacqui and Tyler, you can be as proud of your Dad as he was of you two for the amazing person he was and the lives he touched, my deepest sympathy to you.
    With great sadness, I offer my sincerest sympathy to all,

    Liana Stephenson

  • Jon Charlton

    Nikki and family,

    My thoughts are with you in this time of great sorrow. Please accept my heartfelt condolences; and sincerest hopes that you draw upon that wonderful person within you to get through this very difficult time. Words alone feel so inadequate at a time like this, so I’ve written a poem.

    Somewhere Else Forgotten Not

    You’re somewhere else now …
    You’ve released your earthly load,
    Where all woes and ails are put aside;
    And life’s angst has no foothold.

    We forget you not.
    Tears well sadly from grief;
    And stricken by mourn,
    Our sobs become relief.

    We cherish your memory;
    And take solace in knowing you.
    Love and friendship was your parting gift;
    and when we take on another hue,
    Once again we’ll be with you.

    Jon Charlton

    My deepest sympathy and condolences to you and your family on your loss.
    I still recall meeting Mike at the ‘Weird Al’ concert where I am convinced he was silently singing just as loudly as we were; or was euqally horrified at the concept :). Being released from the veils of this world, I am sure he is now singing loudly and joyfully, but sitll missing you, and patiently waiting for the day when you will be re-united.

    Nikki,

    Margot and I were shocked and deeply saddened to hear about your loss. I have very fond memories of Mike coaching the girls. He was a wonderful coach, very kind, generous and respectful to the girls. As a parent, that meant a lot to me. Though we haven’t seen each other for a while, I ran into Mike and Tyler at Thrifty’s not that long ago. He was as warm and friendly as ever, and we had a great chat, catching up on Jacqui and Meara, Hayley-Rose and Tyler. Unfortunately, Margot and I will not be able to attend on Thursday, but you and your family will be in our thoughts.

  • Geoff Gardiner

    I was so saddened to hear Mike had left us. He was the nicest guy who was a friend in grade school at Willows through to grade 9 at Oak Bay. When I learned Nikki was his wife, and that they had kids, I was delighted…delighted he had done well, found a great gal and had a loving family. Mike deserved that.
    I had so hoped the opportunity would arise to see him again to express how proud of him I was…but…dear Mike.
    Clay’s right though, Mike’s Hot Wheels set…was awesome.
    Drive on, Mike.

    With heart-felt sympathies to the Deighton’s, Geoff G.

I vivedley remember the final game of the Stanley Cup in 1967 when the Leafs won and you and your dad George celebrated with pots and pans. You had the best Hot Wheels collection ever! Loved you buddy!
