June 14, 1933 – February 18, 2010

Michal died peacefully on Thursday morning at Royal Jubilee Hospital after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He is survived by his beloved wife, Julia, after 52 years of marriage, as well as friends and family in Poland and Ukraine and across Canada. Michal was born in Milowce, Poland. After surviving the tragedy of World War II, he and his wife immigrated to Ottawa in 1965. In 1980, they moved to Victoria, B.C., where Michal worked for the local school-board. He was very active in his retirement, particularly in his devotion to the Polish community at the White Eagle Hall. Julia would like everyone to remember Michal as a patriotic Pole and Canadian and a proud, practicing Roman Catholic. He will be remembered for his happy demeanor, constant signing and playful jokes. Julia is very grateful for the staff at Royal Jubilee’s West Wing for their support, care and excellent professionalism during Michal’s last days.

A Funeral Service will be held at SACRED HEART CHURCH, 4040 Nelthorpe Street on Monday, February 22, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Pawel Szczur officiating. Interment will follow the service at Royal Oak Burial Park.
“May he rest in peace.”

Julia, you have my deepest sympathy for the loss of Mike. He was a wonderful man and loved by so many.
I worked at Sundance Elementary with Mike and always enjoyed his good nature and sense of humour. After he retired, I would see Mike at James Bay where I taught also. He would come to my classroom to visit while you were at the community centre.

Please accept my best wishes to you and your family at this sad time. I also lost my father to Alzheimer’s disease, so I’m sure these last years have been difficult for you. I am happy to have known Mike.

I’m truly sorry to hear of Michal’s passing, I have fond memories of him and they will always be close to my heart. Unfortunately my wife and I cannot attend the funeral but our thoughts and prayers are with Julia and the rest of the family and friends.
