The families of Mona MacKay (nee Smee) wish to announce her peaceful passing on December 25, 2015 in Victoria, BC at age 92.
Mona lived a rich and fulfilled life beginning in Brandon, Manitoba. Her love of dance was obvious from an early age and continued throughout her life. Her marriage to Tim (TK Sumida) was the beginning of fulfilling her lifetime dream of marriage and family. Together they raised 6 children, 5 of whom were adopted. Once her children were teenagers Mona enjoyed many rounds of golf with the ladies on the courses at Clear Lake and Sun Lakes. She was particularly proud of joining the “hole in one” club at age 77! Mona was an excellent seamstress and knitter and took pride in how she dressed. She was well known at Sunrise for her hat collection and impeccable style!
Mona is predeceased by her parents Leonard and Cecelia Smee, her husbands Tim Sumida, Don MacKay and her special friend Wally Thomas in addition to her two dear brothers Bill and Doug. Left to cherish the memories of her life are her children Guy (Suzanne), Lynn, TJ, Debbie, Dyan, and Reed (Patti) and step-children Jenna (Yves), Holly (Evelyn), Ross and Jane MacKay.
Mona had a deep lifetime friendship with her two sisters-in-law Wilhelmina and Daphne Smee and a special bond with her nieces and nephew’s -Frances, and Douglas, Karen, Craig and Grant. She was also blessed with 9 grandchildren -Timothy, Julie, Heather, Trisha, Vanessa, Tristan, Nick and Alex as well as 9 great grandchildren. Bill and Elna Crane and Pat and Marty Lynch became special “uncles and aunts” to the Sumida children and Raymond and Maria Evans developed a close friendship with Mona centered around her love of dance.
Her family would like to thank the staff at Sunrise Senior Living in Victoria for the loving care and attention Mona received during her years of residence there and to Dr. Leong for his compassionate care and concern right to the end.
Flowers are gratefully declined and if desired, donations can be made in Mona’s memory to the Parkinson’s Society of Canada or the charity of one’s choice.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Mona’s life will occur in Manitoba in the summer of 2016.

Cheryl Gagnon It was with sadness that I recently read of your Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmothers passing.
It was Mona who hired me for the receptionist position at Ora Dental Studio in 1979. I worked next to Mona for several years before her retirement and have many fond memories of her. She was always very kind and gracious to me, with a sense of humor that I totally enjoyed. She was also a wonderful teacher. When I decided to knit a White Buffalo sweater as my very first knitting project (I mean, really, how hard could it be), it was Mona who helped bail me out when I messed up the collar. She did not take over my project, but showed me where I had gone wrong, encouraging and patiently teaching me how to correct my mistake.
Although I have not seen her in many years, she kept in touch with me with her annual Christmas card, which warmed my heart.
She truly was an amazing woman. She may have hired me as a receptionist, but I will always consider her a positive influence and a blessing in my life.Our thoughts and prayers of comfort are with you all during this time.

After meeting Mona for the first time, it took only a few minutes before one referred to her as “MOM”. She had that special gift of making a person feel like you were part of her family.
