In Loving Memory of Norman Monty Porter
It is with deep love and respect that we announce the passing of Norman Monty Porter, who departed this life on July 4th, 2025, on the Saanich Peninsula, surrounded by friends and family.
Norman was born and raised in Victoria, BC, Son of James “Monty” and Florence Porter. His father was the founder of Cords Piston Rings, a legacy that sparked Norman’s lifelong passion for cars. A true enthusiast, Norman built numerous custom cars—most notably a 1950’s Ford convertible that earned a feature in Hot Rod Magazine.
After attending the University of British Columbia and earning his degree in Architecture, Norman returned to Victoria where he served as a building official in Oak Bay and later Central Saanich. It was during this time that he designed and built his first two family homes, where he raised his eldest children and began to establish his reputation as a gifted designer with an eye for modernist detail.
Norman eventually moved into private practice, where he designed many distinctive homes and businesses that still grace the landscape of Vancouver Island. His work—rooted in Mid-Century Modern aesthetics and marked by his personal flair—earned him both attention and acclaim. Later, he developed and built custom homes in the Ten Mile Point area, always maintaining his signature sense of refinement and precision.
After closing his business in the mid-1990s, Norman shifted his focus to travel, family, and his beloved Samoyed dogs. Even in retirement, he remained a passionate architect and car enthusiast; offering insight, consultation, and mentorship to friends, family, and fellow creatives.
Norman was a man who valued appearances, carried himself with grace, and never let the world see the ebbs and flows behind the curtain. He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Norman is survived by his son Kris Porter, daughter Nadia Porter, and son Jeremy Newton (Jaimie), as well as his cherished grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 9th at 9:45 AM at Royal Oak Burial Park, followed by a reception at 700 Mt. Newton Cross Road, Victoria.
In lieu of flowers, donations toward funeral expenses can be made directly to the family.
Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Ken G Evans I first met Norm just after high school and kept in touch through the years mostly through boating and travelled together
with our boats most summers in Desolation Sound. In the last few years we kind of lost contact although
out of the blue Norm would show up at my home for a visit about once a month. Norm was very gifted and could fix or build most anything which I admired.
