Radka Shaw (Hladisova). It is with extreme sadness and sorrow that l announce the passing of my lovely wife of 17 years Radka who died peacefully in my arms on Aug 17, 2023 at the Sue Ryder Hospice in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, U.K.

Aged 47, she lost her 3-year battle with breast cancer. She was predeceased by her brother Martin.  Radka was born and raised in the Royal Town of Uhersky Brod in the south east part of Moravia to Frantechek and Ludmila Hladis on October 7, 1975. An outgoing bubbly little girl, full of creativity and drive. An accomplished skier and skater by her early teens. An early love of self-taught sewing and design were to be her driving force and passion though.

On completing her high school, Radka studied nursing at the university of Brno and passed with the highest grades. She also won the title Miss Moravia in her teens. But she still wanted to learn more.

Radka made the move to London as an Au Pair to study design and textiles, and learn English where she worked in London’s West End.

On a chance meeting in London in 2001, Radka met Bernie Shaw and what started as a  commercial design offer for making stage clothes slowly grew into something much more.

Radka and l were married in Victoria BC on Aug 28 2005 at UVic’s Interfaith Chapel.  Radka’s infectious smile and inner sparkle will be forever missed. Her energy of entering a room full of strangers and leaving a room full of friends was one of her hidden talents. She leaves behind our 2 amazing children, Madeleine and Valentino.

A lover of Czech folklore, music and dance Radka spent most of summer holidays in Czech with her family. Outdoors, picking mushrooms, swimming, drinking wine with friends, this was Raddies world. Teaching both Maddie and Tino to speak Czech, always something going on or being arranged. She had a knack for putting good vacation holidays together, being it in Austria skiing, or on a beach in Croatia. Never a birthday or anniversary missed, she was as much a secretary as a mother, wife, sister and daughter.

Her love and passion for design got her into the costumer hire trade. Aladdin’s Cave was her true love. 4500 costumes put together in every era throughout history. She would hand dress each customer to perfection taking time to get every detail right for the period. Total bespoke service.

Radka was cremated at the request of her family.

The love, care and compassion shown by all the staff and doctors at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall in Peterborough through Radka’s final time with us will stay with me forever..

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at 2:00 pm, with Reverend Joan Scandrett presiding. Reception to follow.

Condolences may be left for the family below.

  • Annette Quan

All who knew and even just met Radka, knew what an exceptional human being she was. When they say the good die young… this is so the true with Radka. We will truly miss seeing her and being around her…
Bernie, Maddie, Tino, her love for you, and the passion for being the best wife and Mother for you shone so brightly. And her fight to stay with you said it all.
We will never really know your pain, but we can only imagine. May peace and her love guide you forward.❤️

  • Denis and Cherie Jenkins

Such a loss to you all we only met her twice but she was a beautiful person. Such a loss for your children and yourself.

  • Susan Miller (nee Shaw)

Until we meet again darling Radka you’ll always be in our hearts and minds. From the moment you contacted me on Facebook we forged a lovely relationship and, thanks to you, I reconnected with my family –
Bernie, Maddie, Tino and Brenda. Over the years our families, cousins, were united and we have so many happy memories of barbecues, boat trips, Christmas dinners in London – all full of fun and laughter. You were a fighter ‘til the very end and have left an imprint on the lives of all you met. We miss you very, very much.

To our family in Canada, I’m sorry we cannot be with you today, but we will be taking part in the service, in our own way, from England. God Bless – Susan, Ian, Richard, Emma, Nick, Darcy and Alannah. XXXXXXX
