Suddenly but peacefully passed away on the 20th of November 2009 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, aged 64. Beloved husband of Theresa Mary (nee Brehaut). Much loved father of sons Richard John JR, Christopher James and daughters Claire Emma King and Nikki Anderson, together with their partners Sean, Nikki, Timothy and Laura-Jane. Adored Grandfather to Dominic, Molly, James and Stella. Survived by his stepfather Kenneth Pulling, sister Patricia, brother Paul and his wife Anne. Born in Burgess Hill, Sussex, England, Richard lived much of his life in Canada. He spent the last 10 years in Guernsey but had recently returned to Canada in May to be with his grand children. A lover of the sea, he will be remembered in Guernsey for his dedication to Channel Islands Air Search, as vice commodore of the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club and member of the Catenian Association.

I’m so sorry to hear of Richard’s passing. I worked with Richard at Royal LePage in London, Ontario. We remember him fondly. He was such a nice man and so devoted to his family. We lost touch years ago. I’m glad to hear that he had been so blessed with many grandchildren and good friends. My condolences to you all.

Thankyou Richard for being an angel on earth, never making a single enemy. A presence in a room that everyone enjoyed..
We will treasure our memories of you, all the fun, joy and lively conversations, your piano, your sailing, your love of Guernsey and Canada and your family, a beer with you at the Guernsey Boat Club,
looking out over the sea on a beautiful evening, or sheltering inside from a blustering gale! No raised topic of conversation was ever dismissed by you, just a warm strength to everyone you met.
My own love of Canada shared with you many and many a time.
Goodby Richard, we will always cherish your loving spirit.
    Ronald.

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to Mr Corcoran’s family.

My husband and I were neighbours with Mr Corcoran for two and a half years in Guernsey. He was a true gentleman, had a great sense of humour and we really enjoyed our conversations on music, history, Poland and many other things. Everytime I play the piano music Mr Corcoran gave to me before he left Guernsey, We will remember him.

We were very shocked and saddened to hear about his sudden passing and we would like to send our love and best wished to Mrs Corcoran and her family.

I met Richard on the Oak Bay house and Garden Tour and with my friend had a wonderful animated talk about the house he was volunteering at and then about Guernsey. We had read the book The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and he mentioned Theresa’s family as being one of the orginal on the island and something about your papers not being destroyed. He loved Canada and his children and we remember him giving that reason for leaving his beloved Guernsey and returning to Victoria to be near them. He was such a gentleman and so interesting with a lovely sense of humour. He really made an impression on us! Our thoughts go out to you and your family at this sad time.

On behalf of the Flag Officers and members of the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club, Guernsey, Channel Islands, I wish to say how shocked and saddened we were to receive the recent sad news.
Richard was a fine colleague and friend to everyone he knew at the club and even after his move to Canada, he remained a great supporter of the RCIYC, keeping in contact with myself and many other club members.
Richard worked tirelessly on Committee matters and was always on hand to meet and talk with all our visitors to the club. We have a great deal to thank Richard for – his contribution to the success of the club will be long remembered.
I offer our most sincere condolences to Theresa and all the family

    John Frankland,
    Commodore, Royal Channel Islands YC

Like so many of us retirees who work out early in the morning at the Oak Bay Rec Centre, I first met Richard in the upstairs lounge for a cup of coffee and I was instantly charmed by his personality, his joie de vivre, and his unique sense of humour. We also connected because of our ability to speak in both french and English, not to mention our mutual interest in boats and music.
I felt that Richard and I were becoming close friends.

A few weeks ago, Richard came to our home for a cup of coffee and my wife Carol and I really enjoyed listening to him play a few tunes on the piano. I reciprocated with a few songs and we all had a wonderful time.

Please accept our sincere condolences, and our thoughts and prayers are with you.
    Norm and Carol

I’m so sad to make contact with Richard’s family under such circumstances. Like many of Richard’s friends in Victoria, I met him at the rec. centre. His charm, wit and intelligence gained him many friends in the short time he had been with us here in Victoria. I would see him at the library, the seniors centre and just walking in the village. Whenever we met, it made my day a little brighter. There was shock and dismay amongst the “regulars” this morning when we learned of his passing. I can only suppose that his generous spirit was needed elsewhere on the wheel of time.
My sympathies are with all of Richard’s family members who were so fortunate to have had Richard as part of their lives.

  • Michiel Vano

RiCHARD AND I first met at the rec centre, perhaps some 6 months ago, you were very cordial and a friendly sort of bloke. Not afraid to tell me about yourself and some of your life story. We, on occasion spoke in French, something you seemed to enjoy. Remember not wanting to know what is around the corner? We had a good laugh about that one.
That you died so suddenly was a shock, as I did not know your health issues, if indeed you had any, we never griped about our little hurts.
Should you meet Lucas, my son, somewhere along the way tell him we miss him and think of him everyday.
To the family, Danielle and I send condolences, on Richards unexpected passing. Sudden death is very harsh, as it is then you realize all the things you meant to say and deal with but now cannot ever be so accomplished. There will be a void that is difficult to understand. Seek strength in one another and you will find some solace.
Goodbye Richard, I really liked you as a fellow human being, a gentle soul with no pretense. Peace ami. Until we meet again.
    Michiel
