Bert was born in Durham, County of Durham, England on June 25th 1919 and immigrated to Canada 6 weeks later with his mother and father. He was a sailor and traveller from the very beginning. Bert’s sister Joan was born on April 19th 1922, and they both attended public school and Port Colborne High School in Port Colborne, Ont. Bert married his life’s companion, Lorna Louise Carbert on Sept 10th 1945. He worked for Inco in Port Colborne until 1956 when he moved to California with Lorna and his 3 boys [Robbie, Larry and Jamie] to work as a registered, professional engineer. Bert had a brilliant mind and worked on projects ranging from the NASA space program to nuclear reactors for companies including Kaiser, Bechtel and Fluor Utah. Richard, their fourth son, was born in California and this completed their family.

Bert loved a seafood feast and listening to his jazz collection. He was a gifted, amateur photographer and loved sailing. He was proud of both of his sailboats, the “Wylda” and later the “Marquesa”. He was an active member of the Vallejo Yacht Club in California and was proud to be Commodore of the Power Squadron. Bert and Lorna loved to travel and lived at one time in Sydney, Australia. In 1988, Bert and Lorna decided to retire to Sidney, BC. They were both especially proud of their international family who continue to live in, and travel to, many different parts of the world. Hasta Luego Dad/Bert!

Cremation took place with the help of Sequoia Gardens Memorial on August 11th 2010. Dear Family
We were saddened to hear of the passing of your Father & Grandfather, Bert Richardson. We became acquainted with Bert & Lorna through my parents, Ed & Gladys English. My Dad worked in the office at Inco and thought very highly of Bert. We stopped in to see your family in California in1959 when we took my parents on a trip out to the west coast. It was a “must” stop for my Dad and one of the highlights of our trip for him.
As Port Colbornites from way back, we knew your grand parents and Joan and Jim as well – all wonderful and well-respected friends.
Bert’s obituary illustrated that he had a very complete and accomplished life. No one could wish for more! May God’s amazing gift of memories of happy family times help to console you in the days to come.
Warm regards Pat (English) & Bert Johns
