Ronald James Michael Sweet passed peacefully in his sleep at home on the night of May 3, 2023 in Victoria, British Columbia, at the age of 68. Born on June 19, 1954 in Calgary, Alberta, Ron fought bravely against cancer for a year before finally succumbing to the disease.

He will be sorely missed by his wife Judith and his two sons, Shane and Jared. His surviving family members, Connie Longeway, Joan and Harry Yewchuck, Shelly and Dennis Erikson, along with many nieces and nephews, will remember him fondly. He is pre-deceased by his younger brother, Randy, both of his parents, Mike and Ann Sweet, and his older sister, Marilyn Quigley.

Ron was raised in Springbank, Alberta, and enjoyed spending time outside on the Bow River. He had a varied work career, ranging from working with Cattle on the Get-A-Long Stock Farm to building fireplaces, and shaping young athletes with Hobbema Recreation.

After moving to Sooke on Vancouver Island to pursue his passion for golf, he was a pillar of the Sooke Minor Hockey Association, coaching both of his Sons to Sooke’s first provincial tournament and then its first title win. He selflessly gave up his beloved acreage in Sooke to
move his family to Victoria, British Columbia for greater opportunity for his sons in academics and athletics.

He enjoyed travelling to warm destinations to show his children amazing beaches and opportunities to experience nature, while challenging himself on various golf courses throughout the United States and Canada. Perhaps his greatest achievement, besides marrying Judith, was a hole in one on the storied Torrey Pines Golf Course.

With respect to the amazing job done by the Victoria Cancer Foundation and Hospice program, we ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either organization.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 2:00 pm, in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, British Columbia.

I enjoyed golfing with Ron at Olympic View Golf Course for many years.
I will cherish his friendship and companionship. We challenged each other
with our putting on the greens. Judith would join us often in the warm summer months for more delightful golfing. I will miss you Ron.

Goodbye Ron. Not only were you my Uncle but you were also my Godfather. You were a very fun person to be around. I will always remember how Shelly called you Spanky and it embarassed you, but all in good fun. Or how Grandma would blurt out the answers to Trivial Pursuit before you had a chance to answer. Perhaps thats why you opted to move your competitive spirit to the golf course? Gone too soon.

My deepest condolences to the Sweet family and their extended family. I will always cherish the great memories I have of visiting Judith and Ron with Shane at the Gordon Head house… Ron will be greatly missed.

Uncle Ron spent a lot of time our family growing up and left us with many great memories. He was that gregarious Uncle who we aspired to be. When I was about 10 he took me for a joy ride in his Gold Mustang @ Sturgeon lake, letting me grab the wheel @ ~ 100MPH what a rush. We also golfed quite a bit at Black Bull & Dorchesters near Pigeon Lake. Every time someone hit a high shot, Ron would break into his special rendition of “Sky Pilot” & remind us how he sang in a rock band during Stampede.

Gone way too soon and will be dearly missed. Rest Peacefully!
