February 18, 1918 – February 15, 2012

Died peacefully with family beside her at Glengarry Hospital in Victoria. Born in Calgary, Alberta and raised in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Ruth was well educated with an Honours BA in History and French from the University of New Brunswick and a Certificate in French and MA in History from the Sorbonne University in Paris. Her studies in France began shortly before the German occupation of Paris but she persisted and had great adventures, including being incarcerated for six months and riding around Paris in war correspondent, Ernest Hemmingway’s, jeep on liberation day and typing his column for him that day. On her return to Canada, Ruth married and had four sons: Errol (Betty), Brent (Sharleen), Robyn (Tamara) and Lance (Mary), who gave her three grandsons, five granddaughters and a great-grandson. As a single parent, she earned her high school teaching certificate and taught French and History for many years in Calgary and, later, at the University of Lethbridge. She ended her career as a senior federal public servant in Ottawa. Ruth loved hiking in the mountains around Banff and Lake Louise and living and rowing on the Gorge in Victoria. She also loved her friends at Wordshifters Toastmasters club in Victoria.

A memorial service will be held at Lambrick Park Church, 1780 Feltham Road, Victoria at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2012. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to one of her favourite charities: the Canadian Red Cross, Oxfam Canada, Inter Pares or Amnesty International. Condolences may be offered to the family below.
