Sardar Bir Singh Dhariwal was born in the village of Chaukimann, Ludhiana District, Punjab, India on May 4th, 1925, and took his last breath on May 5th, 2025, in Victoria BC – just a day after his 100th birthday.
Sardar Bir Singh, whom most of us knew as “Papaji”, is survived by his 3 children and their spouses: Amarjit Singh (Jagrup K.) Dhariwal, Ranjit Kaur (Kulwant S.) Johal, & Manjinder Kaur (Sukhbinder S.) Sekhon.
Papaji was also a proud grandparent of 6: Ripple, Mandeep, Ajitpal, Jagjitpal, Gaurav, & Monique; and 3 great-grandchildren: Siyana (13), Raunaq (8), & Cian (2).
Papaji spent his childhood in Punjab with his 2 brothers and many friends, marrying and moving to Mumbai as a young man, and retiring after 40 years as Superintendent of Customs & Excise at the Bombay Port Authority. He supported & inspired many to join the shipping industry in a post-war time of globalization & trade. His retired life was mostly spent between Canada and India with his loved ones, and many, many friends.
Papaji is remembered as a voracious reader with a great sense of humor and a curious mind. We thank Papaji for his stories, his speeches, his advice, and, most importantly, his secret stash of chocolates.
We bid Papaji a heartfelt departure as he joins his wife of 75 years, Sardani Harbhajan Kaur Dhariwal, in the heavenly realm.

Nitin Shringarpure We were staying diagonally opposite on the first floor at Wadala (Mumbai), where Papaji and his family used to stay . Circa (1965 -75) or about.
Papaji’s son Amarjeet and me were in same school and are buddies since then.
We as children would always find Papaji as a loving, jovial , kindhearted person always with a beaming and catching smile.
Regardless of all the noises , shouting and playing we did in front of their house , and bothering them at any hours for a glass of water ( since they were on ground floor) he never once showed his disapproval and was always happy to be with us and guide us.
May his soul rest in eternal peace
