Born in Toronto, a middle child with 8 siblings, Sandy graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1943. He designed and built early television sets, and quickly progressed to the start-up and running of television stations, including CKCO Kitchener and CJOH Ottawa. Later, he worked for the Canadian Association of Broadcasters establishing international protocols at the UN in Geneva, Switzerland. Sandy retired to Victoria in 1988 with his late-wife, Doreen, where he curled and lawn bowled; living first on beautiful Harling Point, and much later, at Douglas House (Amica).
Sandy was a devoted, loving father/husband to Doreen, Donna, Lawrence, Tanis and Julia Day, and grandfather to Handro, Jemima, Marlow, Raffles, Felix, Julian, Kellen and Elias.
Grateful thanks to the warm and friendly Douglas House care team.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Hotel Grand Pacific Ballroom on Sunday, February 28 from 2-5 PM.

My Sincerest Sympathy Tanis and family. We are so pleased and proud that he published his book to have so many people enjoy. The story he wrote is very interesting!
So Sorry to hear of Sandy’s passing. He gave me my first TV opportunity at CKCO Kitchener, and called me to Ottawa to participate in the building of CJOH. He was a mentor, and a father-figure for my early development as a broadcast engineer.
I eventually, after Austin Reeve, inherited his job.
He was always ready to permit us to try something new, even if he questioned it’s success, allowing us to learn by experience.
I have an autographed copy of his life story, which I enjoy re-reading from time to time.
Always fondly remembered.
Lawrence and all family:
My thoughts and best wishes to you all today and in future. As a member of the Canadian chess community, I don’t know Lawrence personally, but have read many of your posts on message boards. Your calmness and reason, often interjected into caustic discussions, I’m sure is also a reflection of how you were raised.
Having lost both my parents, always remember and love to keep his memory alive.
Condolences to you and your extended family.

To your family: What a wonderful rich life your dad/grandfather lived! I liked Sandy very much, and he was always very kind to me in my connections with him over the years. I also particularly loved how he keep his humor, his singing, and his great vitality as he lived into his later years. He had a lovely spirit! He will be missed….
I’m sorry I can’t be there to celebrate his life, and it is taking place as I write these thoughts.
Much love to you all, Kit
